GOVERNOR'S REPORT MARCH 2019

TAKE A ZONTA JOYRIDE!

"Whether you are talking about education, career or service, you are talking about life. And life must really have joy. It's supposed to be fun." --Former First Lady Barbara Bush

Identify your "WHY?" -- in Zonta and in life. My "WHY?" is based on gratitude and my desire to share time and resources in thanks for all the blessings I have received. Zonta allows me to share JOY by empowering women through Zonta. I, in turn, receive even more JOY as I meet new people, make new friends and see the results of our efforts locally and around the world.

Our Zonta International President Susanne von Bassewitz said it best: "We all believe in making the world a better place by empowering women and we find JOY in doing this in a community of like-minded people that even extends to other nations
and cultures."

Join us at your area workshop this spring where we will work to find our personal "WHY Zonta?" that we can share with others and strengthen our organization for the future!

Zonta International Foundation Report
Bonnie McArthur - Foundation Ambassador

Thanks to all who donated to the Rose Day Fundraiser. What a wonderful way to honor a woman friend or mentor in your life. I am sure many women were pleased and touched by the thought. All money collected through that campaign went into the Rose Fund -ZIF's unrestricted funds that are used to complete the shortfall in any of our promised projects this biennium. As of the end of February, we are at 133% of the $200,000 goal, putting us in good shape. This is a great fund if you want your individual gift to go to "greatest need."

The first year of the biennium will soon be over, and only 14 of our 37 District 15 Clubs have sent in their Club contributions. That is just 37.8% as of the end of February. Presidents, PLEASE remind your treasurers to send in your pledged amount by May 15 so they can be recorded for this year. It would be outstanding to be at 100% this first year.

Lastly - hope to see many of you at the Area Meetings where I will be sharing our current Zonta International Foundation projects and can answer questions you might have. The Area Meetings promise to be fun and informative. In the meantime - happy spring!!

Who is Eligible?
Women of any age, pursuing a technology degree or closely related program full time and who demonstrate outstanding potential in the field.  Only those graduating in December 2019 or later will be eligible for this year's award.

Women not enrolled in a university, who are pursuing continuing education in IT or a closely related field, are also eligible to apply with certain restrictions.

These scholarships can only go to candidates that are recommended by clubs.  One way your club can provide a candidate for the District level is to designate one of the scholarships you are already giving as a Women in Technology Scholarship.  Your scholarship recipient would not only benefit at the club level but the door would be wide open for her to receive educational assistance at the District and International level.

Log in to www.Zonta.org and go to https://membership.zonta.org/Tools/Award-Scholarship-Fellowship-Tools. Just scroll down to find the documents.

JANE M. KLAUSMAN WOMEN IN BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP

Dear District 15 Zonta Clubs,

As discussed at the Fall Summit 2018 I am supplying a letter to be edited with your own club information to submit to your local college and universities that have business programs. We need to get the word out about the Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship. As well, I am supplying an exhaustive list of colleges and universities so our district can divide and conquer and get the information out. Our goal is to get more than one application submitted.

The deadline for the application to our Governor is July 1, 2019. However, since I am the representative for the district I would like to receive the submissions by June 1, 2019. This gives me time to go through the applications and decide which one can be sent forward to our Governor. So, each club can set their own individual deadlines, as long as we get them in in time.

Thank you for working on this with me and I look forward to seeing more applications this year.

If you see any colleges or universities on the list that are not appropriate for this scholarship please let me know so I can revise the list. Since I don't live in Michigan this was a large Google search.

ADVOCACY REPORT
Denise Sylvester/ Hilary Henley

Zonta International District 15 is part of the Equal Pay Coalition. As a coalition member, we have been invited to work with Governor Whitmer on advancing equal pay. We are working with the Governor's office for an alternative event on equal pay when the Michigan legislature is in session. Just a reminder - the Michigan legislature is not in session on April 2; the rally at the state Capitol on Equal Pay Day has been postponed.

April 2, 2019 is Equal Pay Day. Clubs are encouraged to participate in Equal Pay Day. Equal Pay Day is the date in the year by which women must work to earn what men earned in the previous calendar year.
What can you do to support Equal Pay Day on April 2 at the club level?

Wear Red to symbolize how far women have come and how women and minorities are still 'in the red' with their pay.

Contact your local government and encourage them to issue a proclamation that April 2 is Equal Pay Day.

Work with a local company and encourage them to recognize Equal Pay Day by offering a discount, equal to the difference in pay between women and men.

Have a guest speaker join your club who has been impacted by unequal pay.

Encourage businesses to self-audit to determine if they are underpaying women and minorities.

Contact your Representative and encourage them to support Equal Pay Legislation. https://www.house.gov/representatives

Be sure to share your story of your Equal Pay Day activities!
