Federal Historic Preservation Tax Update: Webinar Today!
As many of you heard last week from National Trust Community Investment Corp. President Merrill Hoopengardner, now is the time to advocate for the Federal Historic Tax Credit. Click here to view an informative handout about the FHTC. The House version of the Historic Tax Credit Improvement Act (H.R. 1158) enjoyed strong bi-partisan support when it was introduced by Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) earlier this month. The Senate version (S.425) was introduced on the same day by Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) and Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD). The Trust's next Policy Webinar will be held today, March 9 at 2:00 p.m. ET.

New Events on the Calendar!

Standard Building lobby
Cleveland Restoration Society members are invited to a SNOOP! of the Standard Building on April 1. Tour this newly renovated landmark, originally built by Standard Bank in the 1920s to house the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers Cooperative National Bank. Weston has converted the 21-floor office building into 281 apartments ranging from 600-1100 square feet. Working with Sandvick Architects, the historic renovation features an exquisite marble lobby, handsome murals and art deco flourishes throughout. The tour will be led by Ed Asher of Weston, who has overseen the transformation of this architectural gem into housing and upscale retail. The SNOOP! will start at 10:00 a.m. The Standard Building is located at 1370 Ontario Street in downtown Cleveland. This event is free for CRS members; you must be a member to attend.

Monuments Men
Save the date for Monuments Men: The Cleveland Connection, a collaborative program presented by Cleveland Restoration Society and the Cleveland Museum of Art on May 3. This program will highlight CMA staff members who participated in the discovery and rescue of art stockpiled by the Nazis during WWII and briefly explore the issues surrounding the ownership of art objects. As a special bonus, Louis Rorimer, son of Monuments Man James Rorimer, will be on hand to answer questions. Following the program get a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the Cleveland Museum of Art's videoconferencing studio with Director of Teaching and Learning Dale Hilton. See how the CMA extends its reach to schools, libraries and groups of life-long learners throughout the country and internationally with this award-winning initiative. The program, from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m., is free and open to the public.

Support Ohio Heritage through the Ohio History Fund
Now's the time to make a donation on your Ohio Tax return to the Ohio History Fund. This Fund supports history projects in Ohio's communities. The Ohio History Fund was created to promote the preservation and sharing of Ohio's heritage by funding local, regional and statewide projects, programs, and events related to the broad sweep of the state's history. The more funding that the History Fund receives through tax check offs, the more grants that can be made to Ohio communities. The goal for the Ohio History Fund tax check off in 2017 is $88,000 - that's just $9 (the average tax check off donation) from 9,800 contributors, out of more than 3 million state income tax refund recipients. Please consider donating to the Ohio History Fund this year!

New Exhibit at Ursuline College
The Florence O'Donnell Wasmer Gallery at Ursuline College presents "Designing Ursuline," an exhibition exploring architecture, fashion and the student experience at the college. "Designing Ursuline" will look at the architecture of the College's five historic locations through photographs, maps and architectural plans; but will also feature samples from the College's Historic Costume Study Collection and Ursuline artifacts ranging from actual dance cards, to nurse uniforms and class rings. The exhibition opened on March 3 and will be on display through April 7. There will be a panel discussion, "Midcentury Modern + Beyond in Pepper Pike," on Friday, March 24, moderated by Plain Dealer art and architecture critic Steven Litt with historic preservation advocate Dr. Ted Sande, AIA emeritus, and two of the architects of Ursuline's current buildings, Peter Van Dijk and Jack Bialosky, Jr.

Campbell Gallery Documents "Making Our Own Space"
The Thomas F. Campbell Exhibition Gallery at Cleveland State University will hold a show through June that documents "Making Our Own Space". MOOS was started in 2015 by Kent State University's Cleveland Urban Design Collaborate to raise awareness in African-American and Latino communities about design careers.   The Campbell Gallery show will focus on activities of students and planners in the Buckeye and Moreland neighborhoods. It follows middle school and high school students as they transform ideas about improving their neighborhoods into physical structures. The gallery is located at 1717 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland.

School Preservation Discussion in Hudson
Hudson Heritage Association (HHA) will host a meeting in response to feedback from the community about the Hudson City School District's Master Facilities Plan. On Tuesday, March 14, a presentation will be given about how the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District is applying the principals of adaptive reuse to preserve important aspects of its historic high school as the building is renovated. HHA has invited two principals from BSHM Architects, Inc., the firm leading the work in Cleveland Heights, to talk about the master facilities plan currently being implemented by the Hudson City School District, especially as the plan relates to Hudson's historic Middle School. The meeting will be held at the Hudson Library and Historical Society at 7:00 p.m.

Surrogate Suburbs Now Available
Partner on our Ward 1 Project, humanities scholar Dr. Todd Michney has completed his book, Surrogate Suburbs. Based upon the systematic examination of several Black neighborhoods just inside the municipal boundaries of Cleveland, this extraordinary book offers a reinterpretation of the class dynamics of Black population movement from established to new neighborhoods within the city. Stay tuned for an exclusive book signing in the near future!
