Revolution Parkour Newsletter
March, 2013

Greetings!

This March marks Revolution Parkour's 5th anniversary! Can you believe it?! We thank God and you guys for making this community possible. To celebrate we are launching the
RVPK Birthday Sweepstakes. See below for details.

New Year's Resolution update of the month:
Has anyone given up on their resolutions? Setting attainable goals is a difficult thing. Let's reevaluate how we put the goals together. If you put together (or used another) diet and exercise regimen for the purposes of inflating a fragile and deflated ego then chances are you have already failed. You aren't the only one. What do you do now? Start over? Set new goals? You could. But, if this is you, I can tell you from personal experience, taking the time to evaluate my relationship with God and with others has made a huge difference in my life.  If you are discouraged because of what others think of you, if you are comparing yourself to those around you, or if your motivation comes from wanting to please others and fit the image of what you think they want you to be, it's time to evaluate the condition of your ego. Your ego is like a balloon and can exist in three states: deflated, inflated, and filled. When your ego is filled, it stops drawing attention to itself and does not think of itself. True humility does not mean thinking less of yourself; it's not self-deprecating. True humility means not thinking of yourself at all. A humble attitude and healthy ego are often overlooked factors that are key to achieving and sustaining goals. Can you imagine what you can accomplish with this type of mindset?!

Let me (Matt) give you an example from my own life. I am in a position where I am criticized often, which might sound like a bad thing but it's really a good thing. The deflated ego is devastated by criticism (I have to remind myself to swallow my pride). The opposite extreme is the inflated ego which cares not at all what others think because it thinks so highly of itself. The filled ego listens to criticism and does something about it. A filled ego either starts a dialogue explaining the reasoning and/or learns from the critic. When it's no longer about you, than you can really start enjoying things for what they are. Apply this to the way you view "working out" and you will start doing things that actually work...it doesn't mean it's going to be easy, but you'll start to enjoy it a whole lot more. If you are interested in reading more on the subject, I recommend The Freedom of Self-Forgetfullness, from which I paraphrased. You can pick it up on Amazon for 2 or 3 dollars.
Fundraiser Update
As of March 1st

Thank you everyone for your support so far! We have reached over 20% of our goal but still have a long way to go! If you haven't heard yet, we are starting a second location in East Portland and are raising funds for construction and equipment.

I have spoken to a few students and parents of students that have said they are planning to contribute but are waiting to do so because they have 40 days left, right? There are actually quite a few of you. First of all, thank you for even considering donating to the cause. However, here are a few reasons why we should all decide to donate today or tomorrow:

  1. The more activity we have on our campaign page and the closer we get to our goal the more likely the fundraiser platform Indiegogo will put us on their home page, which will attract even more viewers and potential supporters. We want this to go viral.
  2. I have done some research on crowd funding and there are a lot of people out there waiting for us to get really close to our goal so they can push us over the edge. We as humans like to place the last puzzle piece. The sooner we get to "the tipping point" the better. If we get to that point with two days left of the fundraiser we may not reach our goal, but if we reach that point soon we have a better chance of reaching our initial goal and even exceeding our goal to build your dream gym.

All this to say, that if you have considered donating at all, either because you want the perks or you want to help us out, we could really use your help! We appreciate it more than you know. Thank you!

Follow this link to donate today:

FAQ's about the fundraiser:

I am on the West side, why should I help?
There are many perks available on the fundraiser that can be used for either the West side or the East side. Also, a larger community of traceurs in Portland can help keep the costs down for classes as well as help fund new equipment for the West Portland (Beaverton) location.

What happens when I donate?

Matt does a happy dance as visions of foam pits dance in his head.

Parkour Fiction - The Death of Phelan Kane
Coming in 2014!

This is a shameless plug for a book that I am writing on the origins of a traceur. The first two chapters are out as kind of a teaser. You can read them at RevoLegend. The book should be complete and available on e-book in early 2014 (March or April, maybe).

I post updates every once in awhile and am currently looking for an artist with a comic book style to help me spruce up my website, so if that's you shoot me an email at matt@revolegend.com.
Have a good Idea?
We love to hear your ideas, so if you have anything that you think would help the gym out, please let us know.

Feel free to send us an email with your ideas!

Your ideas at work:
(A list of student and parent ideas)
  • A new rope
  • ZET: Zombie Evasion Training with weapons
  • We will be getting new vaults soon
  • And so many more... Keep 'em coming!

Sincerely,

Matt & Whitney
