Sermon: "Parables from the Underside" Luke 18:9-14, 15:11-32 March 12, 2023, Rev. Jason Butterick

Parables from the Underside

Luke 18:9-14; 15:11-32

March 12, 2023

Jesus came to lift up the lowly. In the Gospel of Luke, a first-century portrait of Jesus, we find stories of Jesus’s ministry with ordinary, unexpected people. They weren’t perfect. Many of them were struggling and didn’t have their acts together. Some of them were outsiders or even outlaws. Whoever they were, Jesus brought the good news of God’s kingdom to those who most needed to hear it. That includes you and me. Through Luke’s stories, we find Jesus’s care and compassion for all as he welcomes sinners and outcasts.

This Sunday, we begin to follow Jesus from Galilee to Jerusalem. The exact route is not identified, and often Jews would avoid the region of Samaria (what is today the West Bank) via a path along the Jordan Valley, adding travel time. Jesus does not avoid the region, despite being greeted with hostility in one Samaritan village (Luke 9:51-56). Generally, the journey would take about 9 days, but Luke has 10 chapters! It is approximately 40 percent of the entire gospel "on the journey to Jerusalem." There is urgency in Jesus's ministry and mission, but he still lifts up the lowly along the way, as the story of Jesus healing the Samaritan leper demonstrates.

Attend Worship: Pastor Jason has encouraged an "A grade" of 90% worship attendance (missing less the 5 Sundays in a year). You can keep up your attendance by joining worship online through our Facebook premiere or our worship online page. Join us in person or online... it will count!

5 pm

Soup and Dessert are served each Wednesday in Fellowship Hall.

Have you traveled to a place you will never forget? People travel for lots of reasons. In the Gospel of Luke, we see Jesus traveling to Jerusalem. Jesus did many things and made many stops on his way to Jerusalem, and ten whole chapters of Luke tell us about Jesus's journey.

Jesus knew that when he got to Jerusalem, he was going to die on the cross. But he was determined to make the journey. Along the way, we see Jesus focusing more and more on helping other people and reaching out to those who are lost. Along our way, are we seeking the outcasts?
