Texas Hell Week – March 24–April 1, 2024

Look for Both New Routes and Upgrades to Last Year’s Routes

Texas Hell Week has been an early season tradition since 1991. The Texas Hill Country offers some of the best Spring riding in America. The seven counties south of the Colorado River offer nearly 1,000 miles of paved roads with little or no traffic. From mid-March to mid-April, the wild flowers are in bloom making for an unforgettable riding experience. Texas Hell Week offers 3 rides daily, approximately 30-50 miles, 50-80 miles and 60-100 miles over 7 days. Every ride is different. Participants can ride as much as they want.

Texas Hell Week is followed by 2 great ultra-cycling events - the Stampede 200 and Longhorn 500. The Longhorn 500 is a RAAM Qualifier. In addition, for those so inclined, there will be evening activities as well. All will take place at Hermann Sons Lodge in Fredericksburg.

Cycling in the Texas Hill Country is truly excellent. Spring is the best time of the year. There are a great many lodging choices in Fredericksburg and the surrounding area. Dining choices abound. This is an incredible opportunity to ride to fitness, learn about ultra-cycling and have fun. Do Not Miss this event!

Upcoming RQs -

Race Across Italy (Silvi Marina, Italy) – May 3, 2024

This year will mark the 11th edition of the Race Across Italy. The Race has become an ultra-racing classic. The energy and hard work of Paolo Laureti and Francesca Attili have turned the Race Across Italy into one of the most popular ultra-road races in Europe.

With nearly 2 months to go before the race, riders from 16 countries have already signed up. There are 70 solo racers registered - 24 in the supported division and 46 in the self-supported division. There are 7 Solo RAAM finishers registered.

Riders will start May 3 from Silvi Marina on the Adriatic Sea, cross over the Apennine Mountains – the “spine” of Italy – to the Tyrennian Sea and back. The route is a N-S oriented counter-clockwise loop. The race is 472 miles with 38,000 ft elevation gain. Participants will pass through several national parks.

The Race Across Italy is a member of Ultracycling Italia and participates in the Ultracycling Italian Championship (UIC). Look for more about the UIC, as well as other Italian RAAM Qualifiers – Ultracycling Dolomitica and 24hr del Montello - in future RAAM Newsletters.

The race is open to solo racers as well as 2 and 4-person teams. Solo racers and 2-person teams may race with a support crew or self-supported. Solo finishers racing with a support crew or self-supported qualify for Solo RAAM.

In addition, there are 2 more road races – RAI 300 Sprint Challenge and RAI 2000 – as well as a gravel ultra associated with Race Across Italy. This is a great time of year for a bike racing in Italy – there is little traffic and the prices are extremely low in the coastal resort towns. You will have an unforgettable experience.

RAAM President/CEO Fred Boethling has been to Race Across Italy twice and said, “I love this race. Paolo and Francesca are wonderful. The race is incredibly diverse. The terrain is spectacular. This should be on every ultra-racer’s bucket list.”

VISIT OCEANSIDE

THINGS TO DO IN OCEANSIDE

Everyone connected with RAAM and RAW is busy in the days before the solo and team starts. The many tasks that happen in Oceanside, from getting vehicles equipped and ready, checking in at RAAM HQ, getting portrait photos taken, etc., it’s a full schedule. So we always encourage racers and crews to arrive in Oceanside as ready as they can be—not only because that’s just smart preparation—but also so that they can take some time to enjoy the town and take the edge off the stress.

Oceanside is a quintessential California coastal escape that includes wide sandy beaches, a quaint New England-style harbor, the historic wooden pier, and charming bungalow neighborhoods.

O’side (as locals affectionately call it) is a destination of discovery where you can explore everything from California history at the “King of Missions” to surf culture at the California Surf Museum and awe-inspiring sea life through exciting ocean adventures.

It’s a playful and fun community that thrives on taking recreation to the next level and boasts world-class surfing, skateboarding, bike riding, boating, and even skydiving. A flourishing farm-to-table food and craft beer scene reflects Oceanside’s creative and entrepreneurial spirit, as do exciting arts and culture programs that earned Oceanside one of just 14 California Cultural District designations in 2017.

Classically charming, eclectic, and always genuine, Oceanside is an ideal place to stay and a true O’riginal.

Florida 500 (Jacksonville, FL) – February 23, 2024  This year marked the 4th edition of the Florida 500. Race organizer, Alberto Blanco – a Solo RAAM finisher (2011) - sent us a great post-race report with lots of detail. The Florida 500 started in Jacksonville and finished in Key West. Usually, the weather is great, but this year riders faced stiff headwinds and intermittent rain. There were solo racers as well as 2P and 4P teams.

Marek Rupinski (POL) finished first overall, riding solo supported, covered the 539.9-mile course in 29h:54m (18.06 mph). Ingolf Micklisch (USA) finished 2nd in 34h:43m (15.55 mph) and Valerio Zamboni (MON) rounded out the podium in 42h:02m (12.84 mph). Rupinski and Zamboni are Solo RAAM finishers – Rupinski in 2023 and Zamboni 7x (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2019). Micklisch and Zamboni will be racing Solo RAAM this year. Zamboni will be attempting to become the first 70+ Solo RAAM finisher. Vanessa McKinght (USA) was the top woman in the solo supported division, finishing in 45h:19m (11.91 mph).

Paul Wickward (USA) finished 1st among the solo self-supported racers finishing in 31h:49m (16.97 mph). Sharon Morejon (USA) was the top woman - the first to finish the Florida 500 solo self-supported, finishing in 50h:32m (10.68 mph).

Participation in the Florida 500 has grown steadily since inception. Riders came from all over. Participants ranged from first-time ultra-racers to RAAM veterans. Many of the participants have raced the Florida 500 before. Almost all participants indicate they’ll be back. Congratulations to all
