What Would You Do?

W

hat would you do if your child was diagnosed with cancer today?  What would you do if your child was hit by a car and in very serious condition at the local hospital?  What would you do if you couldn't pay your bills due to your childs' illness?  Contractors For Kids can help with answering these questions.

In 2005, Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias founded Contractors For Kids to try and help children and families that have been negatively impacted due to sickness, injury and death.  They had been helping children and families on their own through the years and felt they could help more if they joined forces with other business professionals in communities throughout Long Island.  A board of directors was put together and they have been making differences in lives ever since.

There are many events held by Contractors For Kids through the year but the three major events is where the majority of the money is raised.  There is a dinner dance in January, a golf outing in June, and a family picnic in September, which over 2,000 families attend.  Through these and other efforts, Contractors For Kids has been able to raise over $1,500,000.  We have helped over 300 families on Long Island, which in turn has been able to give them a respite from their day to day.

One family that they helped was a young boy that was having seizures.  There was a surgery that could be tried but the insurance company deemed it experimental.  The cost was over $90,000.  Kevin and Alan took it upon themselves to pay for the surgery. The child lost half of his brain, due to the surgery abut is now doing very well and no longer suffers from seizures.  Another family that was helped through Contractors For Kids was a little boy who had cancer.  Mom had stopped working and before they realized what was happening, the notice came in the mail that the bank was foreclosing on the house due to non payment.  They contacted Contractors For Kids who was able to make the required payments so that they did not lose their home and mom could concentrate on her child.  Contractors For Kids has been able to pay travel expenses for the a sick child and his family so that when he needed treatment in a far away hospital the whole family was able to stay together and get through this tough time.

When a child gets sick, most times one parent will take time off from work and may even have to leave their job.  Before they know it, the bills start piling up and they can't get out from under this heavy burden.  This is where Contractors For Kids comes in.  They believe that parents only need to worry about their child at this point.  Contractors For Kids will make a payment towards medical bills, pay a cell phone bill, mortgage payment and have even paid for experimental surgeries that insurance companies have not paid for or felt were not needed.  Every parent should have the opportunity to do all that they can to help their child.  And in the instance when everything has been tried and it couldn't be helped, Contractors For Kids has paid for funerals for children when the parents were not financially able.  The hardest thing for a parent to do is pay for their child's funeral.

Contractors For Kids exists because of private donations by foundations, individuals and businesses through the support of our local communities on Long Island.  Thank you for inquiring about Contractors For Kids and how we can change your life as you go about changing the lives of others.  We will be there for our families, will you?
