Keep a Weather Eye Open: Tips for Preparing Your Boat for Hurricane Season
|
|
Marcali Yacht reefs the main for Hurricane Season
- Don't get caught waiting until the last minute to prepare your boat for a storm. A boat can always be replaced, but a life cannot.
- Plan to evacuate the marina early at the approach of a storm. Most boat owners seek to move their vessels as far inland as possible. Inland canals tend to offer some protection.
- Plan to have a list of everything that is necessary to evacuate your boat and to make sure that these items are on board before hurricane season arrives. Some of these items include, but are not limited to, a full tank of fuel for the auxiliary engine, fuel for the cooking stove, drinking and cooking water, nonperishable snacks, batteries, and spare parts for all important systems on board.

Despite how easy it is to just "plug in" your destination, it is always a smart idea to have a backup plan just in case technology takes a turn for the worse.
Proper knowledge of navigation skills are a must for any boat or yacht owner. Learn basic navigation skills by becoming familiar with
* chart plotting
* aids to navigation
* speed, time, & distance calculations
Keep paper chart packs onboard at all times for reference, covering your geographic location, as well as all intended points of travel with a basic navigation tool kit and learn how to use them efficiently.
