Somehow, it all seemed rather normal, even though they were building the tabernacle for the Lord. Instructions had been given to Moses and the children of Israel did their best to follow each and every detail. At last, everything was in its proper place. Moses then raised the frames and posts to their full height and began hanging the curtains to complete the huge tent-like structure. As the people gathered around, they joined in a time of worship as incense was burned and burnt offerings took place. Finally, with the raising of the last curtain, the people had finished their task. The tabernacle of the Lord was completed.
Without warning, that cloud, which had led them out of Egypt and was stationed on a nearby mountain, suddenly began to move. It gently moved toward the plain until it came to rest directly above the tabernacle and then, as the people watched, it slowly descended upon it. The cloud completely covered the structure and it was filled with the glory of the Lord — so much so, even Moses could not enter. The Lord had come to dwell among his people.
This Old Testament account foreshadows another day, one yet-to-come. Our strivings may often seem quite ordinary, as we, following the teachings and commandments of the Lord, daily perform those small tasks that help build the one true church of God. But one day, the last church service will be held, the last soul will be saved, the last cup of cold water will be given in the name of Jesus. All the parts of the Lord’s great church will finally be in place. Then suddenly, without warning, the heavenly cloud, which has been resting nearby, will begin to descend upon this earth, and every eye will see the glory of the Lord, as Jesus makes HIS triumphant return to this earth.
O Father, help us realize each task accomplished in your name is bringing us one step closer to that glorious day when Jesus will return in the midst of his special heavenly cloud.
