One of my favorite times of the day is sunrise. Every day as the darkness of night gives way to a new morning, the variety of colors dancing on new cloud patterns start the day with beauty and wonder. How creative our creator God is! Each sunrise is a reminder that darkness will not have the final say.
Darkness can be frightening. It covers where you are and disguises where you need to be. As a child, you believe monsters hide in the dark. As adults, we speak of depression, anxiety, confusion and despair as dark times. Whether you experience darkness as a physical reality or a figurative one, it can be intimidating and make us question what we always thought to be true.
Darkness was one of the final plagues God brought upon the land of Egypt. While the Egyptians “felt” the darkness Israel “had light in their dwellings.” God provided what was necessary for the people of Israel. There was light in their homes so they could continue to function productively as individuals and families.
There are occasions when it feels like there are no options. You cannot see where to go or how to get there. Then, I remember the comforting words of Jesus. “I am the way.” As long as Jesus is around there is hope of direction, purpose and a new day. When things are dim and dark bring your thoughts back to Jesus and watch what kinds of colors and designs he can create in the dawn of opportunities.
Lord, help me see your light so that every day is filled with creative hope. Amen.
