A large bright red “36” was on the top of my math test. It was JUST addition! How had I failed so badly? Then, I remembered the reason for the test. My seventh-grade teacher had been introducing a new unit on addition when my class got annoyed. Several loudmouths and smart students boldly complained, “We already know how to add!” The teacher promised us we would be given a test to confirm that the next day, then we’d move on to the next unit. After the test results were discussed, we started the addition unit.
We see in today’s reading, that the people of Israel had grown quite comfortable in their own abilities. Not only did they disobey God’s directions for Jericho, but they (specifically Achan) had taken items from Jericho that the Lord had ordered destroyed. Sadly, this is not discovered until they lose 36 warriors at the first battle of Ai. When Joshua and the elders mourn the loss and seek the Lord for answers, they learn of this sin. Joshua confirms what the Lord had said, and Achan is stoned along with all of his people and possessions, original and stolen. Only then does the Lord gives Joshua his directions for taking Ai, which Israel follows to the letter. Joshua then leads the assembly of Israel in renewing the covenant with their Lord and building a memorial at the spot so they won’t forget the lesson learned.
Challenge: Consider building your own memorial to remember a lesson that God has taught you. Memorials don’t have to be piles of rocks. One of my memorials is one small rock. My engagement ring reminds me of more than just my husband’s love. It also reminds me of God’s faithfulness in answering my prayers for my best life partner.
Almighty God, we seek your face for what we need to do in our current battles. Reveal to us where we are sinning against you and how we can reject those choices and return to following you.
