These two chapters detail the final days of Jacob, his pronounced blessings on his sons, and ultimately the death of Joseph. Wrapped in these final pages of the book of Genesis is a remarkable glimpse into the workings of God’s will.
God’s plan, in the making before time, is partially revealed in the life of Joseph. From his early dreams, to the rejection and persecution at the hands of his brothers, even to his wrongful imprisonment that resulted in an audience with Pharaoh, Joseph’s life is a beautiful reminder that God is working out his ultimate will. Though we rarely understand how the pieces fit together, this passage provides a tiny, yet reassuring view of our Lord’s intricate mosaic that is leading to the consummation of all things with Christ’s return. It is Joseph’s faith in God’s plan that allowed him to forgive his brothers, ultimately telling them, “you intended to harm me, but God intended it for good” (Gen. 50:20, NIV).
Lord, help me to trust the workings of your will, especially when I am walking through pain and difficulty. Your will be done.
