Deuteronomy 18:15-22

By Penny P. Vann

Today, like at any other time of history, there are many voices that surround us claiming that they speak for God. No matter where we turn, we hear people saying that their philosophy or practice is the true way to peace. It’s difficult not to get caught up in what these people are saying, but who are we to believe? God told the Israelites this kind of day would come, and he said that they should listen to the prophet that he would raise up. Who is this person? In Matthew 17:5, God, referring to Jesus, tells Peter, James and John, “This is my beloved son; listen to him.” Are we listening to obedience to Christ’s voice today? Are we silencing the other voices that are trying to confuse us or lead us astray? As we listen to him, the sea of other voices fades. Confusion can be quieted, and we can walk in assurance. Let us recommit ourselves today to listen to Christ’s Word!

Father, often we listen to those whom you have not sent — those who try to lead us away from your Word and your Son. Forgive us, Lord, and let us today hear his voice again, that we may follow you wholeheartedly! Amen.
