The Lord reiterates the importance of keeping the Sabbath.
One of the final statements that the Lord makes to Moses before he goes back down the mountain to the people of Israel is this: “Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you” (Ex. 31:13, ESV).
Remembering and honoring the Sabbath is integral to the spiritual and daily life of the people of Israel. The people of Israel’s keeping the Sabbath holy is of utmost importance, because they have been set apart as a holy people for the purpose of the Lord.
This reminder to keep the Sabbath is grounded in the creation narrative, and the unique choice of Israel by God. Keeping the Sabbath is an act of keeping the covenant that the Lord made with his people. It is the responsibility and duty of the people of Israel.
Sabbath today may look a little different than in ancient times. Today, Sabbath is still meant to keep holy — as we are a holy people set apart for the work and the purpose of the Lord.
Consider what it may look like in your life to keep the Sabbath, to honor it and to keep it holy.
