REAL POWER

Exodus 7:12

If you are the parent of more than one child, I’m sure you are familiar with the concept of “anything you can do I can do better.” There is a substantial struggle between siblings at times to gain more success, competence or power than the other. Many times, the expectation is for the parent to make judgments as to who the winner may be. Ironically, the parent must then assert their own “power” as the ultimate in the home so that the struggle is ended and peace is restored in the home.

Power struggles are a very real part of our world today. Everyone wants to be in power or have power. Whether it be social, personal, political or something else, people are more comfortable when they feel they possess power. The opposite is also true. We are the most fearful when we perceive a loss of power. I have yet to meet the person who longs to be powerless.

The story of Exodus is one of liberation but it is also a story of a great power struggle. Pharaoh vs. Yahweh. Pharaoh is the greatest in the land of Egypt. His power is so extensive people refer to him as a god. Now someone dares to challenge his rule. Pharaoh will soon learn that real power comes from the one who is not just called a god, but is the creator God himself. Yahweh. Not only does Yahweh have the ability to perform great and mighty miracles, he also has the ability to end the tricks and illusions of others.

What power is necessary in your life today? Do you feel powerful enough for whatever is in front of you? If not, don’t worry. It’s never about your power, but God’s. Time and time again, God proves that his power is greater than any challenge, obstacle or struggle. If you need power today, he has plenty.

“You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
