OLD
Tuesday, March 12, 2019
Strangely (in my opinion), one of the few possible objections to God’s plan that Moses DIDN’T raise was, “I’m too old.” After all, Exodus 7:7 reports that Moses was 80 years old when he “did as the LORD commanded” him to do (Exodus 7:6). Most people (even ministers) think that 80 is a good age to “retire” rather than a good age to start a major new “project” like leading 600,000 men (plus their wives and children) out of slavery and into freedom. Why, we wouldn’t even try starting a job as a Wal-Mart greeter at that age!

Yet, many people — throughout history — have done their best work in their “golden” years. Christine Brown climbed the Great Wall of China at age 80. Benjamin Spock (famous for his book on child-rearing) became at advocate for world peace at age 83. Mary Baker Eddy started a newspaper (the Christian Science Monitor) at age 87. Michelangelo created the architectural plans for a famous cathedral at age 88. Arthur Rubenstein performed one of his greatest recitals (in Carnegie Hall) at age 89. Marc Chagall because the first living artist to have his work exhibited at the Louvre at age 90. Harry Bernstein published his first book at age 96. Martin Miller was working full-time as a lobbyist for senior citizens at age 97. These are just a handful of examples.

Unless failing health actually makes it impossible to do something, there’s no good reason to quit doing what God has called you to do (or even to not start doing something new if he calls you to) just because you’ve had a certain number of birthdays. Psalm 92:14 says that the righteous person will “still bring forth fruit in old age.” Look at how God used 80-year-old Moses!

God, thank you for this word of encouragement, reminding me that I’ll never be “too old” to serve you in whatever way you call me to! Help me never to raise objections, but always to be ready to do whatever you want me to!
