As we read through the familiar story of David and his encounter with the giant Goliath I am reminded of the words of Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (NKJV).
David, the youngest son of Jesse, came to visit his brothers who were at war and encountered Goliath. Goliath was seen as an obstacle to Saul and his army but with the strength of God, David saw Goliath as an opportunity. Our verse reads: “David replied to the Philistine, ‘You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies — the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.’”
How often I ask myself, “Is this a problem? Is this an obstacle in front of me? Is this change in our world a problem or an opportunity?” As we have lived through most of 2020 with many churches unable to worship in person, many have used this as an opportunity to expand our presence through social media, YouTube, the internet or live streaming services. How many more individuals have heard the good news that God so loves the world; he gave his only Son; that all who believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life? This obstacle for his church has become an opportunity through Christ who strengthens us.
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
