Three heavenly guests appear to Abraham. God wants Abraham and Sarah to know that they are going to have a “child of promise” in their old age. Sarah listened from her tent to a conversation between Abraham and his guests. Her response was that she laughed when she heard that at the age of 90 she was going to give birth to a son. About one year later Sarah gave birth to Isaac. God was beginning to fulfill his promise to make Abraham the father of a great nation!
However, Sarah laughed! From Sarah’s perspective, it was just too late in life to give birth to a child. Sarah underestimated who she was dealing with. God was making the promise! This was Adonai, “the Lord of All” who made this oath to Abraham.
God asks a question: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” All of us must answer that question. Where in your life is God saying, “It’s not too late”? Is your response an inner chuckle at the mere suggestion of God doing something special in your life? God’s power is so great that, despite our laughter, God blesses us anyway, just like he did with Sarah … and he gets the last, loving laugh!
Lord, grow my faith as I wrestle through my limited vision, to realize nothing is too hard for you! Amen
