TRUTH, JUSTICE AND
THE RIGHT WAY
Thursday, March 21, 2019
Years ago, Superman’s mantra explaining his purpose for fighting evil was: “Truth, justice and the American way.” Today, America, the world and the church have moved far from this idea. Sin (evil) is justified by most, and the word “sin” itself has been purged from people’s vocabulary. As Romans 1:32 states: many even approve of sinful practices contrary to God’s decrees. This seems to be our world today both inside and outside the church.

God laid out the moral code for the children of Israel to follow when he gave them the Ten Commandments. Now in chapters 21–23, he laid out civil law teaching them fairness and justice for living in community, rules regarding buying and selling free slaves, treatment of widows, fatherless, slaves, foreigners and the poor, borrowing and lending money and property, generosity, consideration of neighbors and strangers, objectivity and honesty in the courts, respect for authority and reverence for him. These guidelines demonstrated his standards of right(ness) and justice. As an aside, many of the framers of America’s Constitution and court system utilized these guidelines.

Unfortunately, an example of today’s compromised thinking occurred when I was teaching a large church group of teens regarding biblical worship, which for the believer encompasses every part of life. Following the teaching the floor was opened for questions and answers. Q: Regarding dating behavior, how far can you go before it’s considered “sin”? A: If you’re trying to find what you can get away with, you’re asking the wrong question! Either you’re dedicated to pleasing the Lord in righteousness or you’re missing the mark.

This passage closed with God’s promise of guidance, of his watch-care and of blessings when he was their only god; he was their focus; he was celebrated through their obedience, not rebellion.

Father, may we seek your truth in your word. May we live in your holiness and righteousness (true justice) since we’re clothed in the righteousness of Christ. And may we follow your right way in obedience.
