Recently my wife and I had the opportunity to attend the wedding of a co-worker. The event was full of ceremony, food and dancing. It was a celebration that will not soon be forgotten, at least by the newly married couple. The reality is many of those attending will surely remember some of the wedding, but it won’t be long before the mental images will fade and the details will become fuzzy. While time will take its toll on my memory, the truth is, I will not think about that night very often. The bride and groom will celebrate that evening every year for the rest of their lives. That annual celebration will keep their memories sharp and their hearts warm as they remember the love they have for one another.
In today’s passage, God gives his people a reminder of the salvation he provided in the Exodus story. He tells them to observe this celebration “throughout their generations” and they did just that. In fact, many years later, Jesus used the Passover meal to offer his disciples another significant marker to remember the salvation of God. Today we continue to partake in the Lord’s Supper as an intentional reminder of his life, death and resurrection.
Whether it be once a month, every week or some other frequency, let us be diligent to come to Jesus’ table and keep our memories sharp and our hearts warm to his love and grace so that we might make the most of today.
“...do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19).
