Joshua 10:25

How do you decide whether to make a decision on your own or to pray about it first? I used to think that only major life decisions had to be cleared through the Almighty until I learned that I didn’t even know what a major decision was. I did not know that my choice of a college would also affect my choice of a husband. Thank the Lord that he did and led me!

In our text today, the Israelites don’t even seek the Almighty about making a peace accord with another nation (9:7–13). When the Gibeonites heard about Israel’s victories, they decided to pretend to be a tribe from far away, unlike the kings west of Jordan (9:1–6) who joined together to fight Israel. The Gibeonites’ deception convinced the Israelites (9:7–13) because they brought moldy bread and dried out wineskins and wore old clothes and shoes, claiming that all were new when they left their land. Israel was fooled because they “did not inquire of the LORD” (9:14). How sad that the Israelites would take such a serious oath without seeking God’s guidance. How sad that they learned nothing from their last battles.

We can thank the Lord that this event seems to have finally taught Israel to trust their God. After this, they proceed to finish the campaign to conquer the rest of the land God had promised them. God even honored Joshua’s request to keep the sun and moon shining until they finished the battle against the Amorites. What might we be able to do if we trusted and obeyed God?

CHALLENGE: Take some time today to think of at least one victory God has given you. What lesson did you learn, or what sacrifice did you make? Compare this to a current situation you are facing. How could you apply the previous lesson to your current issue?

Father God, we are so grateful for your patience with us and your power that is stronger than any of our challenges. Thank you for continuing to teach us, even though those lessons have called for some sacrifices.
