When the word got out about the victories that God’s people had over their enemies, their enemies joined forces against them. The Gibeonites had used trickery to ally themselves with Israel, but the commitment had been made so Joshua honored it. When the Gibeonites appealed to Joshua for help against their common enemies, Joshua and the Israelite army marched all night in order to take the enemies by surprise. And take them they did. They fought and their enemies ran away.
The Israelites were faithful to their allies, but more importantly, they were faithful to God — and God came through for them in a mighty way. We are told that more of the enemy soldiers died from the hail that God rained down on them than were killed by the swords of the Israelites (Josh. 10:11). God is faithful! He will do what we cannot do on our own.
Lord, help us to keep the commitments we have made — first of all to you, and then also to others. Bless our efforts as we serve you!
