LEARNING TO TRUST IN GOD
Thursday, January 7, 2021
An amazing aspect of the biblical narrative is that the Creator of the universe took the time to reveal himself to the rest of creation. With this revelation comes knowledge of his working to provide a way for us to be brought into his fellowship. It is within this fellowship that we learn to trust in God and his plan for our salvation.

Abram continues to learn to trust in God even as their company comes to a crossroads. The flocks and people of both Abram and Lot had grown numerous. The land they were sharing was not able to support them all. Disputes were arising. Because of this, Abram suggests to Lot that he pick which direction he wishes to go. Whichever direction Lot went, Abram would set out in the opposite direction. God is always able to sustain his people no matter where he leads them. Abram trusted in God even as Lot chose to settle in the most ideal place and left Abram with a barren dessert. Abram set out for the Negev. God renewed his promise to give the land to Abram and his descendants. It wouldn’t matter which direction Lot chose, Abram and his family would still receive what God had promised. Even in the dessert, Abram’s needs were met because of the Lord’s blessings.

Lot soon finds out that choosing the best-looking place is not always the best option. Abram went out into the wilderness where all he had to sustain him was God. Lot, on the other hand, walked right into the middle of a political and economic powder keg and it blew up in his face. The lush land of abundance was already highly contested by several groups that were on the verge of open warfare. Lot got captured and Abram had to come to his rescue.

Once again, Abram had the choice of taking the best spoils for himself. He chose, instead, to rely on the promises of God. He even gave a tithe out of gratitude for all that God had accomplished. God alone provided for Abram and his family.

Abram trusted God in the wilderness, so can you.
