Genesis 6:5-8

By Robert E. Fillinger

“For by grace are ye saved … ” (Ephesians 2:8).

The story is told of a woman in a midwestern city who was injured in her home. Friends came and took her from home to the hospital. Later it was discovered that concealed in the mattress of her bed at home, there was a fortune amounting to over $20,000. When the woman was told of the money, she replied, “Is that all? I thought there would be $25,000.” There she was, lying upon riches, but enjoying none of the advantages.

It is different in our lesson today, however. After a description of religious indifference and antagonism, after the picture of moral laxity, the Word says, “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” Noah took advantage of the riches which he had in the grace of God, and when the flood came, he was borne to safety by the ark.

How tremendously reassuring to know that the reservoir of God’s grace is still full. By his grace we are saved; through it, we are accepted in the beloved; because of it, our lives can be blessed with his favor and love, undeserving though we are.

Give us the faith, O Lord, to draw on the great store of our riches in Christ Jesus. Amen
