Are we there yet? Children and adults alike have asked this question countless times as they begin to tire of the travels they are on. Now, I suppose there is nothing wrong with this question, however it does tend to squelch the enjoyment that can be had upon any road trip. Rather than enjoying conversation with travel companions and all the sights that can tickle the eyes and mind, we grow frustrated about how much time we must spend in the vehicle.
In today’s Scripture reading, we read how God prepared to lead his people on a road trip. I image that the trip started out rather nicely. Maybe a song of Gods goodness was sung and stops along the way to point out creation. However, somewhere along the way, the travelers grew tired, restless and grumpy. These natural emotions got the best of the travelers on the long road trip and, as a result, they began to grow restless and impatient. They began to complain about their leader, gripe about how the road was not as good as where they came from, and how they were tired of the food provided along the way.
As these emotions swelled inside the travelers, how much of God’s goodness did they miss? They forgot what God had already done and his ultimate control in their lives.
Today you to are on a road trip and God is leading you. He is leading you through his word, prayer, church fellowship and in other ways. He is leading you on this road trip of life because you are his image and likeness bearer. He is leading you if you have confessed Jesus as Lord and Savior because you are his child.
No, the road will not always be easy or exciting, and you will wonder and ask, “are we there yet?” You will grow tired and weary just like the Israelites, but do not let travel fatigue prevent you from enjoying talks with your fellow Christians who are your travel companions. Don’t let fatigue keep you from enjoying all the sights along the way. Remember that God is in control and sovereign over every step along the way.
