I am “directionally challenged.” I can’t find my way much of anywhere without help. I rely heavily on my GPS. One day recently, I found myself in new territory with no GPS signal. I tried following my written directions, but it didn’t work. I was lost. I didn’t see any places where I could stop and ask directions, so I just kept driving until the GPS signal kicked in. I got where I needed to go — but not by the most direct route.
Other people have often tried to help me find my way to a store or place of business by saying things like, “Oh, it’s right next door to where the __________ (I’ll let you fill in the blank!) used to be. Not very helpful when you’re new to town and don’t know your way around!
All of this is why Joshua 3:4 caught my attention: “Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before.” How would the people know which way to go? They had received these orders: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the Levitical priests carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it.” God would get them there when they followed his leading.
We often find ourselves in places we’ve never been before. Sometimes we don’t know which way to go. Those are times when we especially need to turn to the Lord and ask for his help and guidance. We can pray like the psalmist did in Psalm 31:3 “Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me.” God will answer that prayer. God is always there. God never sleeps. God is able!
Lord, thank you for your guidance! Please keep me on track today and every day.
