Deuteronomy 22–25

On more than one occasion I have been asked to speak to young people about faith and life and how they connect. On one hand this can be a daunting task, especially as I’ve gotten older and less relevant, (don’t follow anyone on Twitter or TikTok, etc). On the other hand, everyone needs an occasional reminder of how significant it is to honor the Lord God, regardless of age, I.Q, social standing, etc.

So, here’s a passage that grabs our attention because it’s so “unbiblical.” But wait a minute. Remember Paul’s words to Timothy? “All Scripture…is profitable…for instruction in righteousness.” Case in point, Deuteronomy 23:13–15. I like to have a young person read this out loud and watch the faces of those who are listening. There’s a look of disbelief and then that quizzical look that basically says; “huh.” Trust me, adults don’t know how to take this either. But think about the essence of what is here, the instruction in righteousness … keep the place holy, don’t offend the Lord God. It’s a life issue, not a bodily function issue.

The question will always be, does your life reflect your faith? Or, how about this, is there any part of your faith or life that you would like to dig a hole for and cover it … just in case the Lord is snooping around in your little world, (and he is). Remember this part of 23:14; “In your gear you shall have a spike…” (JSB). It’s the tool used to dig the hole to cover your mess. It’s a call to purity, to holiness and righteousness. Wrap your heart and mind around Matt. 6:33 and when the Spirit of the Lord comes calling, he’ll find you living the life you are called to live.

“What about you, what are you going to say; Follow his steps, walk in his way.”
