TRUST THE PROCESS

Joseph seemingly had used the ‘trap’ against Benjamin to determine if his brothers had changed. Sensing this, Joseph revealed his identity to them (45:1–4). The brothers “were dismayed at his presence” (45:3), perhaps fearing retaliation, but Joseph reassured them, explaining that God had purposed to bring him into Egypt in order to prepare the way for the family to be saved (45:5–8). Joseph had come to see his purpose in light of God’s greater plan “to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors” (45:7). This plan is put into action as Joseph’s family joins him in Egypt (46:5–27). Two poignant vignettes are included; God’s reassurance to Jacob (46:1–4), and the reuniting of Jacob with his beloved Joseph (46:29).

The advantage of hindsight allowed Joseph to see the greater picture guiding his circumstances; all his experiences were designed by God for the salvation of many (45:5–8). Oftentimes, as we go through trials, we cannot discern what God is doing. Joseph serves us as an example and an encouragement that there is in fact a greater plan in place if we will only be patiently faithful to allow God to work out his purposes in and through us.

“The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands” (Psalm 138:8).
