“God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (1:37, NASB).
The past couple of months, I have had a tremendous opportunity to interact with my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter on several occasions. A number of times people have seen my son and me together and have responded, “He looks just like you,” or “He’s your spitting image.” Even though he probably possesses more of my wife’s personality traits, he is a combination of Pam’s and my becoming one in every way, physically, spiritually and emotionally.
It is amazing to realize Adam, in a perfect world without sin, made in God’s image, was able to reflect God’s characteristics and personality in human form. Eve also, the “completer” who made Adam whole, was created in God’s image and perfected in his likeness. Even after the fall of man, Adam and Eve were able to have a relationship, somewhat broken, with this awesome Creator.
Even though we are corrupted by sin, we are still created in the image of God. He loved us so much that, even in our sinful state, he wanted to have a restored relationship with us. Therefore, he sent the “second Adam” (1 Corinthians 15:45-49), his own Son Jesus, perfect in every way, to satisfy his requirement of a life of faultless obedience to his standard, and shed his blood on the cross to please his condition of blood sacrifice (Hebrews 9:22). It is an overwhelming thought to realize we can still have a personal, intimate relationship with the awesome Creator of the whole universe through repentance and belief in his Son Jesus Christ.
Lord, I praise you that I am made in your image and of valuable and infinite worth to you. Thank you for allowing me to have a personal relationship with you through your Son Jesus Christ and his sacrifice on the cross. Work in me with your Spirit to reflect your image of love and obedience in everything I do today.
