“The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace” (Exodus 14:14).
“Relax!” That was Moses’ suggestion to the Israelites. He was just as aware as they that the cruelly oppressing Egyptians were hot on their trail. Yet, he says, “Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord.” Moses could just as appropriately stand up and speak to our generation and say, “Don’t get uptight. Stop trembling with uncertainty. Look above your tranquilizers to the triumphant Christ.”
Yes, of course, it is true that crime is rampant, terrorism is sweeping our country and the world and the horrible specter of drug addiction is a threat now even to the unsuspecting. Let us not, however, forget that the Red Sea parted at God’s will. Every great victory of God for man has been won when most men least expected it. Who would have believed when darkness enshrouded Golgotha that God was in that darkness, reconciling the world unto himself?
Has not victory always followed close upon the heels of apparent disaster for those who trust? Jesus said the tragedy of life would reach a great crescendo and then at that very time we should look up, for our redemption draweth nigh.
“Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” And please help us to be ready. Amen.
