Numbers 8-11

By Steve Ruberg

Set Apart — Levites were set apart for service in the tabernacle. They were to be pure to perform the duties prescribed by God for his worship.

Challenge — God provided manna every day. People tired of the same food over and over. Their wailing about not having meat became repugnant to God. God decided to provide meat. Moses challenged God’s provision. God’s response brings a challenge of belief: “Is the Lord’s arm too short?” God provided quail, more than enough to feed all the people. But then in anger, God punished their unbelief and discontent.

Dependence — God’s actions caused the people of Israel to be completely dependent upon him. God loved his people and continually offered his leading, provision and wisdom. The people of Israel often insisted on their own ways. They complained about their situations, God’s provision and the course of their lives. God was patient, but at times he punished.

Christians are challenged to be dependent upon God and satisfied with his provision. Ask yourself, “Do I accept God’s leading, provision and wisdom?” “How many blessings have I missed by not paying attention, obeying or being totally dependent upon God?”

Lord, forgive my failures. Guide me through my challenges of trust. Help me fulfill my responsibilities in service to you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
