SET APART. CHALLENGE. DEPENDENCE.
Monday, April 29, 2019
Set Apart — Levites were set apart for service in the tabernacle. They were to be pure to perform the duties prescribed by God for his worship. They were totally responsible for their duties. God provided for them through the offerings and sacrifices people brought to the tabernacle.

Challenge — God provided manna every day. People tired of the same food over and over. Their wailing about not having meat became repugnant to God. God decided to provide meat. It would take a lot of meat to feed all the people. Moses challenged God’s provision. God’s response brings a challenge of belief: “Is the Lord’s arm too short?” In other words, “AM I not powerful enough to fulfill my promises?” God provided quail, more than enough to feed all the people. But then in anger, God punished their unbelief and discontent.

Dependence — God’s actions caused the people of Israel to be completely dependent upon him. He gave the order to move by the cloud and fire. He gathered people by the trumpets, different sounds for different groups. The trumpets were sounded for feasts and festivals. God provided manna daily. He set people apart for specific duties.

God loved his people and continually offered his leading, provision and wisdom. The people of Israel often insisted on their own ways. They complained about their situations, God’s provision and the course of their lives. God was patient, but at times he punished.

Christians are challenged to be dependent upon God and satisfied with his provision. Ask yourself, “Do I accept God’s leading, provision and wisdom?” I know I have in many times and places, but I still struggle with this challenge. I know how blessed I have been when I followed God’s way. How many blessings have I missed by not paying attention, obeying or being totally dependent upon God?

Lord, forgive my failures. Guide me through my challenges of trust. Help me fulfill my responsibilities in service to you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
