WHO DO YOU TRUST?

1 Samuel 17–18

In the early days of television there was a game show titled, “Who Do You Trust” in which three questions were asked of a couple to see how much money they could earn. The husband was told the topic of each question and then the catch phrase was restated by the MC when he asked the husband whether he trusted himself or his wife to answer the question. I can only imagine the arguments after the show if one of the spouses answered the question incorrectly.

As I read today’s very familiar Scriptures, I was impressed with the thought that the same question of “Who Do You Trust?” could have been asked of each person involved in this story. What do you think Goliath would have answered, or Saul, and finally, David? I believe that Goliath would answer without even a pause of consideration stating; “I trust in the strength, skill and ultimate success of myself; THE GREAT GOLIATH!”

Saul would have been a little more hesitant in his reply as he said; “I, The King of the Jewish Nation trust in my armor and weapons but I can not risk being injured, therefore I will select a champion to wear and use my vestments in defeating Goliath.”

Finally, young David would stand with his sling, and pouch of stones and say, “I trust in the Lord God Almighty and his will be done. May he alone, be glorified by my meager efforts. Hallelujah, praise God!”

Now, how would you answer the same question? There have been times in my life when I could relate more to Saul and Goliath. I’m not proud of that declaration but it’s a truthful statement. But if I’m honest today, I would not hesitate to echo the words of David. Again, how about you; Who do you trust with your life decisions? If you need any encouragement at all, read Chapters 17 and 18 one more time. There’s a blessing there for you today.

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up” (James 4:10).
