Judges 11–13

In Chapters 11 and 12, Jephthah was born, the son of Gilead and a prostitute. The sons of Gilead’s wife did not accept Jephthah. Jephthah became a rebel with a band of like-minded men.

When the city of Gilead was threatened by the Ammonites, no one was willing to lead an army against the Ammonites. Jephthah was called upon to be their leader against the Ammonite invasion. He accepted the condition they would make him king if he was victorious. He was and they did.

The Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah. He was changed to be used by God to be victorious over the Ammonites. But, he made a vow to God to sacrifice the first to emerge from his tent when he returned home. Thinking it would be a pet sheep or goat, he was mistaken. I do not understand God’s allowing the sacrifice of Jephthah’s daughter. He did allow the sacrifice of Jesus, too.

God’s Spirit moves when he has a plan for his people. Sometimes unlikely people become heroes. God’s Spirit has moved within many people to accomplish great deeds against many odds. It does not have to be a great heroic act to be used to accomplish what God needs to be done. The smallest act of kindness may produce a great harvest in the one who receives it.

Several people have changed, not because they were seeking God, but God was seeking them. Seek God while he may be found. Scriptures encourage us to seek God as the way to please him and be rewarded by him.

The book of Judges has many references to the “Spirit of the Lord” coming upon people to become leaders to accomplish his purpose. Common men were changed into leaders. Seek God and be changed for whatever purpose he has for you.

Heavenly Father, I want to be open to receive your Spirit and be a part of your plan.
