Sonya Clark                          art news: March/April

Greetings!

It has been heart warming seeing many old friends and meeting new ones at my openings in January and February.

The press has been generous in their attention of late. On Friday, March 2 at 8:30 pm WHYY (Philadelphia's PBS TV) will air a piece on my work and Snyderman Works Gallery. There was a spot on Texas Public Radio, a critic's pick in the Washington Post and Art Daily for the group exhibit Next, a review in Art in America, a spot on the BlackBottom blog, an article in Art Daily for the group exhibit Magical Visions, an article in VCU's Commonwealth Times, and reviews in Creative Loafing, the March issue of the Journal of Modern Craft, and the San Antonio Express

In a few days, I head out to Doha, Qatar to present the Beaded Prayers Project, a collaborative project that I began back in 1999. VCU's Qatar campus will be hosting the exhibit and lecture. My colleague Dr. Sara Wilson-McKay, Chair of VCU's Art Education Department, will be joining me.

I hope our paths cross in the next couple of months..be it in Qatar, Ireland, Arkansas, DC, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New York, or Delaware.  Until then, I am wishing you the all best in your creative endeavors. And, thanks, as always, for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Sonya

Exhibit: CONVERGE Sonya Clark + Quisqueya Henriquez

Where: McColl Center for Visual Arts, Charlotte, NC

In this two-person exhibit, "Clark investigates simple objects as cultural interfaces. Using items such as a comb, a piece of cloth, or a strand of hair, she wonders how they come to have meaning collectively. The history, function and material of objects direct the form, scale, and material choices of her work. Henrquez explores racial, ethnic, gender, and cultural stereotypes through sculpture, collage, prints, video, installations, and sound. Her work often fuses formalities of economics, current events, and Art History with vernacular life in the Caribbean."
