Things are moving and shaking here at Shumla! Treks are in full swing. Shumla is representing our work and research at conferences across the nation. Hearthstone Project is moving forward at a rapid pace with transcriptions of Huichol consultations, field work and lab work. Never a dull moment at Shumla!

Shumla attended the annual American Rock Art Research Association conference in Tucson, Arizona.
Drs. Diana Radillo Rolón and Karen Steelman presented their research during the program. Shumla's Executive Director Jessica Hamlin shared Shumla's mission with ARARA members at our booth. It's great fun to share the rock art of the Lower Pecos with others who are as passionate as we are about rock art. Diana and Karen were especially wowed by their visit to Hohokam petroglyphs on Tumamoc Hill.

The conference Banquet Speaker was our good friend Dr. Julio Amador Bech, Professor in the Political and Social Sciences Faculty at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). It was wonderful to have time to share knowledge with him, as always!

Colour & Materials: Past, Present & Future

Our April Trek is a full Seminole Canyon experience! Trek a National Historic Landmark with us. | |
We will begin with a Trek to VV75 and the Red Linear Type Site on Saturday, April 22. This is an impressive archaeological site containing extremely well-preserved deposits within the shelter. It was at this very location that the first radiocarbon samples for rock art in the Lower Pecos were collected. | |
On Sunday, April 23 we will spend the day Trekking to Fate Bell Annex, Fate Bell Shelter and Running Horse. Fate Bell is one of the most famous and largest Pecos River style rock art sites in the Lower Pecos Canyonlands Archeological District. You’ll hear about the breath-taking rock art, the lifeways of the people who painted it and our most recent research. | |

Dedication of Texas Historical plaque, made possible in part by Shumla's work.
Several years ago, students & educators from Comstock High School teamed up with experts from Shumla Archaeological Research & Education Center. Through the use of technology they were able to identify locations at the cemetery that may contain remains of those who are interred there but with time lost their identification markers. This work they performed has become an invaluable part of the Comstock Cemetery archives. At a dedication ceremony on March 7, 2023, the Comstock Cemetery Association paid special recognition to the Shumla staff who gave their time and talents both then & today to make this project a reality.

Interpretations of feline figures with speech-breath | |

In her last Lunch & Learn, Dr. Diana Radillo Rolón presented the method to document and analyze 58 feline figures from 11 sites in the Lower Pecos Canyonlands region. In this Lunch & Learn she will talk about a repetitive pattern of felines associated with speech breath (lines coming out of or into the mouths of the figures), as well as sensory signs depicted in other parts of their bodies. She will share a comparative analysis between Lower Pecos and Teotihuacan felines and discuss possible interpretations. And present the current radiocarbon dates that Shumla obtained for Halo Shelter, a site with an iconic red feline, to compare with the dates for the Teotihuacan murals. Join us!
