Greetings!
The recent article in this week's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel highlights the current manufacturers' conundrum between maintaining competitive productivity/quality and keeping your best workers productive.
The secret (balancing costs, skills, capital, and customer demands) is in dividing your process into two major categories according to requirements:
1.Precision, Repeatability, and Speed: Done best with automated or semi-automated equipment/tools.
2. Adaptability, Flexibility, and Judgment: Best done by your skilled people
The better you can optimize this division of process, the better will be your productivity and the lower will be the stress levels on your valued personnel.
Cutting to the chase, we will have to spend some of the money we would spend on skilled people on high capability tools as those needed skilled become increasingly scarce and associated costs mount at an accelerated rate.
