The recent earthquakes in Herat province, Afghanistan, have resulted in a dire situation for the local population. On October 7 and 11, 2023, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake and a subsequent strong quake struck the province, causing significant destruction and loss of life. Over 1,000 people, primarily women and children, were killed, and approximately 21,000 homes were destroyed (per UNICEF Report), leaving many families without shelter and livelihoods.
The impact of the earthquakes has been devastating, with the loss of lives, homes, livelihoods, livestock, and crops.
The situation has been exacerbated by the harsh winter conditions that have taken hold in the region. Temperatures have dropped below freezing, and many families are living in tents or sleeping in the open, facing life-threatening conditions at night with no means to heat their temporary shelters. The winter weather is also slowing down efforts to rebuild and recover from the disaster.
