According to the National Association of Manufacturers, manufacturing accounts for nearly 8.5% of the U.S. workforce and produced a total output of $2.5 trillion in 2021. The southeast will continue to grow its share thanks to abundant land, skilled workforce, pro-business legislations and improving infrastructure.

Identifying your target manufacturing industries on an Economic Development Organization or other partner website is a must. However, “advanced manufacturing” is often too broad, as the NAICS code covers a wide variety of subsectors. You will benefit from narrowing target industries into subsectors and highlighting area advantages. In addition, take into consideration trends and disruptions such as automation and artificial intelligence, reshoring, trade adjustments and changes in national and global politics. You can strengthen your initial target of advanced manufacturing with a subsector like ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING.

VisionFirst Advisors' Managing Director Greg Word presents the concept of Additive Manufacturing. Take a quick trip through this new approach to manufacturing.

Weyerhaeuser Industrial Additive Manufacturing

WHAT IS ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING AND WHY IS THE MARKET PROJECTED FOR GROWTH?

Additive manufacturing is the process of creating an object by building it one layer at a time. It has transformed the way products are designed, prototyped and utilized. The technology continues to evolve, with research and development focused on expanding material options to improve speed and scalability. This approach to manufacturing is quickly evolving from a niche market to an ongoing disruptor, impacting a wide range of sectors.

As companies begin to evaluate physical locations for a new advanced manufacturing facility, technological shifts in additive manufacturing are manifesting themselves in an updated approach to location strategy when it comes to supply chain access. With Florida’s high concentration of aerospace and Georgia’s high concentration of automotive-related industries, the two states are ideal locations for additive manufacturing.

The global additive manufacturing market size was evaluated at $20 billion in 2023 and is expected to hit $90 billion by 2030.

North America leads the market (roughly a 33% share), historically driven by the aerospace and defense industry sector for advanced composites and other high-performance materials. The growing automotive industry also contributes to the demand, particularly lightweight materials that improve fuel efficiency.

SPOTLIGHT - GEORGIA

As the demand for lighter and more efficient vehicles increases, the automotive industry is looking to companies like Endeavor 3D, the largest 3D printing contract manufacturing partner in the southeast, for innovative additive manufacturing solutions. Endeavor 3D provides on-demand production and a diverse set of services to overcome design constraints, reduce part weight and increase speed-to-market.

FLORIDA

Florida is a top state for aerospace and defense, and it is home to more than 400 aerospace companies, specializing in aerospace engineering, machining, avionics, robotics and manufacturing operations. AM Forward is a consortium for catalyzing innovation and adoption of additive manufacturing across Florida’s industrial base. Partners in this initiative include the nation’s leading minority-serving institutions, including FIU, FSU (FSU-FAMU College of Engineering), UCF and UF.

GEORGIA

Georgia has a long history in automotive with its more than 200 automotive-related facilities, and it has superb strong transportation access to move products both domestically and internationally. The Port of Brunswick is the second-busiest roll-on, roll-off port for trade. During the past decade, the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute (GTMI), Research Institute (GTRI) and its faculty from multiple schools have led major research initiatives in additive manufacturing.

Florida and Georgia are ideal manufacturing hubs, with their outstanding partnerships, talent, resources and infrastructure for additive manufacturing companies to prosper. Weyerhaeuser's three supersites offer distinct advantages of abundant land, skilled workforce, pro-business legislation and global transportation infrastructure corridors.
