A Note from the Principal...

The big day is tomorrow!  It's time to get Snowed-In at Maize Elementary School.  Our staff has been hard at work preparing for a fun evening for our students and their families.  The evening kicks-off with our optional pizza dinner from 5:00-6:00, so if you had your order in by the deadline we will have your pizza and drinks ready to go.  Although we won't have additional pizzas on hand to purchase, we will have additional drinks available for $0.50 each.

The stations will begin at 5:30 and will run through 7:00.  We will have greeters at the front doors passing out event maps to help you navigate through the fun.  To answer a few questions that have come up:

        1.  Yes, every MES student will take home a new book!                     Thank you MES PTO for donating the books!  Siblings                  will get a treat as well.

         2.  No, we won't have ice fishing this year, but we do have                another fun way to get a book or treat.
         3.  The snowy photo booth is back.  We did change its                      location though, so look for it on the map.
         4.  Every grade level has planned a Make-It-Take-It                          station.
         5.  Exploration Place is back!
         6.  Raffle tickets can be purchased at Snowed-In.  They                    are $1 each.
         7.  Every student gets one ticket - it will come home with                  them soon.
         8.  Yes, we're excited about Snowed-In!

I hope you and your family are able to come, if only for a portion of the evening.  Call the office at 722-8230 if you have any questions.

Mark your calendars for Friday, February 9 when we will celebrate our Valentine's Day parties!  The parties will begin at 3:00.  Parents are welcome to start decorating at 2:45, but not prior to that time.  Thank you, in advance, for helping our kids enjoy this fun holiday celebration!

Parent/Teacher conferences are coming up Thursday, February 15 from 4:00 to 8:00, and Friday, February 16 from 10:00 to 6:00.  Please contact your teacher if you have questions about when your student's conference is.  Thank you for investing in a strong relationship between school and home.  It is so very important that we are in support of each other to do what is best for students.

January went by fast, and an already short February packed full of activities will, without a doubt, fly by.  I guess that happens when you're having fun!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO REMEMBER
Our school day starts at 8:45 am every day.  Student drop off begins and 8:35. It is important that students are not dropped off prior to that time. This is a matter of safety as there are no staff members supervising until 8:35. Thank you for your cooperation.  If you need to drop your student off before this time, the YMCA has a latchkey program at MES.  For more information please call the YMCA at 316-264-1610.  Students who arrive after 8:50 am will be counted tardy.  If a student is brought late to school the parent must come in the office and sign them in.

The district dismisses students 40 minutes early every Wednesday to accommodate the Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).  The teachers participate in the PLC to discuss curriculum, instructional strategies, data review, technology training, etc.  School is dismissed at 3:20 pm every Wednesday.

Please call the office at 316-722-8230 if your child is going to be absent or if you have a transportation change.  For student safety, please let the office know of a transportation change before 3:00 pm and 2:30 pm on Wednesdays.

If your student is riding a different bus home with a friend, a note is required from both sets of parents.  These can be given to the office for Mr. White to sign and can then be given to the bus driver.

HUDDLE UP
Hello everyone!

We are finishing up basketball skills and testing.  Next will be our volleying unit while focusing on bumping and setting a volleyball. After that is our jump rope unit, so if you have some laying around, dust them off! Hopefully the weather is going to start warming up a little bit by this time and we can do some more activities outside! Have a great February, and keep moving!

FROM THE NURSE
Children's Dental Health Month

February is Children's Dental Health Month; therefore, our school-wide dental screenings will be February 23, 2018.  If you choose to opt-out of having your child screened please email myself Nurse Erin at  eingalls@usd266.com or Para Linda at  lhermes@usd266.com as soon as possible.  This is an ideal time to work toward a common goal:  Stop Tooth Decay Before It Starts!  Dental disease is the number one chronic health condition in children.  The pain from dental disease interferes with talking, eating, and learning.  If you have any further questions or concerns regarding dental screenings, please feel free to contact me @ 316-350-2911.

 FROM THE COUNSELOR

From The Counselor...

The counselor lessons in February will be about honesty and test taking tips for 3rd-5th graders.  Honesty at school means doing your own work and asking your teacher for help if you need it.

The goal of student placement is to design balanced classes, according to established criteria, which create the optimal learning environment for all Maize Elementary School students.  Each classroom is a small community that must be representative of the diverse social, academic, and physical needs and abilities of all students.  If you have any concerns about your child's class placement for next year, please visit with me, Becky Stephens-you can call me at 350-2913 or email at bstephens@usd266.com .  After you complete the enrollment process in the summer, you will be able to see who your child's teacher will be for the upcoming year.

Frequently Asked Questions about class placements:

If my older child had a teacher, will my younger one have that same teacher?  Not necessarily!  Sometimes that happens, but it's not always followed or done purposely.  So again, if you have concerns-please let me know.

Can I pick a teacher for my child?  No, we don't take teacher requests, but we do want to know what type of teaching style your child works best with.

Will my child have 2 teachers?  If your child is going into 3rd grade or 5th grade, they will have 2 teachers.  Our teachers share responsibilities teaching math and reading.  Your child will have one teacher in the morning and a different teacher in the afternoon-staying with the same class.  Both teachers are listed in Skyward under the "grades" tab.

Friends?  Let me know friends or separations.  We want every student excited about the new year.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  I do start working on class placements this early.  Stop by during conferences and we can visit about next year.  If you need to schedule a time with me, please feel free to email or call.

DON'T FORGET LUNCH MONEY!
USD 266 uses the Skyward Food Service and RevTrak fee payment systems. Please check your email and phone numbers in Skyward, so you may be alerted when your child only has 2 lunches left. Parents receive an email when your child has $5.00 left in their account. Parents receive a 2nd email after your child has 1 lunch left. When your child doesn't have any money into the account-we have your child go to the office and call you. Please put money into the account that day. You will also receive a 3rd email when your child has a zero balance.

Please check with your child if they are eating breakfast at school or getting a 2nd milk-the charges add up quickly. If you have more than one child, please check both lunch accounts. We are not allowed to go into one child's account to pay for a sibling.

Parents may keep as large a balance as they wish in a child's account (for example: $5.00, $10.00, $15.00 or more). If the student doesn't have enough in his/her lunch account to cover a meal, the account will be charged for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and milk if the student chooses to take one. No meal charges will be allowed.
If you have any questions regarding Skyward and the RevTrak system, please call our school office. We want every child to have a good lunch, every day!
