We have completed 8 days of 180 Days of #soaringtogether. We are beyond excited in how the school year is going. Our Golden Hawks are striving daily to be the best version of themselves. Our teachers are continuously pouring themselves out to meet the needs of their students. We are also excited about those of you that have been amazing supporters of our goals and vision here at MMS. We look forward to strengthening our partnership this year.
We have a couple of very important dates coming up on August 23rd and August 26th. These are the first dates for the new state assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. All students will take the ELA assessment on August 23rd and all students in 6th and 7th math, along with pre-algebra, will take the math assessment on August 26th. This is a progress monitoring assessment, which means that we will get the results shortly after students complete it in order to identify any areas of concern to focus on for the upcoming year, as well as areas to help enrich. It is very important for our scholars to do their best so our teachers can provide the proper support for our students. Algebra I Honors and Geometry Honors students will work with their math teachers in the designated holding areas during the math testing period since those are high school courses and will take the PMAs.

Annual Parent Consent Forms
|
|
Each year, families MUST complete the Parent Consent Form at the start of the school year or as soon as possible after you enroll your student in school.
The Parent Consent Form includes fields for:
- Acceptable and responsible uses of technology
- High school social media use
- District use of a student’s phone and/or video
- Release of student directory information
- Clinic services
- Health screenings
This year, parents/guardians must choose to opt in or out of each individual clinic service and health screening by law. In the case of an emergency, parent/guardian and appropriate emergency personnel will be contacted.
The Device Refusal Form is OPTIONAL and only needed for families planned to have their student use personal device, NOT a district device.
All online parent forms are through the OCPS Parent Portal in the Skyward Family Access app. For help completing the online forms, please view.

I’ve been teaching middle school math for 15 years and this is my 6th year at Maitland MS. I graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Elementary Education and a Middle School Math Endorsement. I’ve always enjoyed helping others. I want to be a positive impact in my students lives the way my teachers were for me growing up. I love watching the kids learn and grow academically and socially.
When I’m not working I love spending time with my family. We have 3 kids and a dog. They are in 8th grade, 9th grade, a junior at UCF and a 13-year-old golden retriever. They keep us pretty busy. We spend many nights and weekends at sporting events watching the kids play. We love to travel and explore new places. This summer we went on a road trip up to Michigan and made many fun memories along the way. My favorite parts of the trip were the Louisville Slugger Factory Tour and whitewater rafting.
I will continue to meet the needs of every student in my class and be continue to be an academic resource for my colleagues.

Weekly SOAR Award
The SOAR Award has been a tradition here at MMS since 2016. Staff members can recognize each other for their hard work and dedication to our school community.
The first week’s SOAR Award recipient went to Mr. David Olsen. Mr. Olsen is one of our newer members to the MMS family. He is our Maestro, (Band Teacher). Over the summer, Mr. Olsen came in on his own with his beautiful children, all under the age of 8, to organize and prepare the band room for the 2022-23 school year. Our summer staff always waited with expectation to hear the Olsens walking through the administrative hall and to be greeted by them. Mr. Olsen has been an amazing addition to MMS, and we can’t wait to see the heights he will take our young musicians to.

The Olsen Family. Mr. Olsen, the 1st SOAR Award recipient for the 2022-2023 school year!
Thank you, Mr. Brown, for presenting me with the SOAR Award. It was a great pleasure to work in my classroom over the summer, and being able to meet and become acquainted with various staff members who were also working diligently to prepare for this school year. Moving to a new work location presents many different experiences. When you are well established in a location and then move somewhere new…you “know things”… but you do not always know where to find those things or how to execute those things in the new place.
The person I would like to pass the SOAR Award to is someone I have known for quite some time, but now working with them, I have come to a new appreciation for who they are and what they do. They are present, insightful, and extremely giving and helpful. Thank you, Ms. Cynthia Johnson, for your welcome to Maitland Middle School, for the help you have given myself and Ms. George, and for the amazing work you do for our students and community here at Maitland Middle School.

Monday's Motivational Moment!
|
|
For years, Monterey, California, was a pelican's paradise. The town was the site of many fishing canneries. In fact, it was the home of the Cannery Row, a street popularized by Nobel Prize winning author John Steinbeck in his novel of that name.
Pelicans loved the town because fishermen cleaned their catch, discarding the offal, and the pelicans would feast on those scraps. In Monterey, any pelican could be well fed without having to work for a meal.
But as time went by, the fish along the California coast were depleted, and one by one, the canneries all shut down. That's when the pelicans got into trouble. You see, pelicans are naturally great fishers. They fly in groups over the waves of the sea, and when they find fish, they dive into the water and scoop up their catch. But these pelicans hadn't fished in years. They had grown fat and lazy. And now that their easy meals were gone, they were actually starving.
Environmentalists from the area wracked their brains to figure out a way to help the pelicans, and finally they came up with a solution. They imported pelicans from another area, ones that were used to foraging every day, and they mixed them in with the local birds. The newcomers immediately started fishing for their own food, and it wasn't long before the starving native birds joined them and started fishing for themselves again.
The lesson for our Golden Hawks? If you ever find yourself starving for success, one of the best ways to get things going in your life is to be around people who are achieving success. Spend time with them. Watch how they work. Learn how they think. You inevitably become like the people you are around.
