Writers!

Are you ready to explore an interesting genre where you let your imagination play in your everyday life? We’re offering an inspiring writing workshop on the Marvelous Magical Real. You’ll create strange stories, tall tales, and fairy fables—short stories intertwined with your daily life.

Making the Mundane Magnificent with the Marvelous Magical Real

Making the Mundane Magnificent with the Marvelous Magical Real with Christy O’Callaghan starts on September 19th and runs for four weeks. The course is an opportunity to explore magical realism, an often misunderstood and glossed-over genre. This is a weekly Zoom class with writing prompts and readings of short stories by women. Students will write one piece under 500 words each week and a prompt for 15 minutes of daily writing sessions, use their life to spark their imagination, and read an assigned short story. Students will share their work, photos, and stories they have found. Enrollment includes instructor feedback and peer workshopping. Join us for a magical workshop!

In today’s newsletter, Christy gets curious about the story behind the story, and shows you how to take an ordinary day and turn it into an extraordinary story. Check it out below!

We also have the following classes starting soon: Travel Writing 101: 2-Hour Zoom (Sept 4), Writing Short, Writing Deep (Sept 23), When Life Fissures: Writing About Grief in Fragments (Oct 7), Research: Prepping to Write Nonfiction for Children and Young Adults (Oct 7), Finding Time to Write (Oct 7), Hooked on Ekphrasis (Oct 9), Writing Disabled Characters in Fiction (Oct 15), Narrative Structures (Oct 15), Writing Horror and Gothic Fiction (Oct 15), Threading the Needle: Writing Thematic Poetry (Oct 18), and Chicken Soup Essays (Oct 28). Magical Realism and The Story Behind The Story

By Christy O'Callaghan

“Magical realism allows an artist like myself to inject layers of meaning without being obvious.” – Shirin Neshat

I’m always curious about the story behind the story. What’s the hidden narrative the author was trying to tell? What’s the subversive message the writer wants to impart to me, the reader? Do they even know they’re spilling these beans? This is an important skill to develop both as a reader and a writer. Magical realism is a powerful form of writing or creating art since it began as a visual art movement while telling a story behind the story.

There’s always the surface story, which is obvious for all to see: the woman moves about her day, goes to work, comes home, makes dinner, watches a movie with her partner, and then goes to bed. Maybe something unique happens. Something out of the ordinary, making the story a bit more interesting, she’s in a hurry and runs a red light, causing a minor fender bender, and flees the scene, adding a twist to her day. As a reader, this could be a satisfying way to digest the piece, moving on with that first reading and saying it’s a story about a woman having a tough day, good enough. But does it have to stay there? As readers who are also writers, we can ask, what’s this story really about?

Magical realism offers layers and levels for exploring both the writing and reading of such a story. The woman wakes up, and everything appears the same, except that an element of the marvelous has appeared during the night, and she discovers that her cat is no longer cat size, but as large as an elephant. How does this impact her day? We follow her as she moves about this typical day with this new challenge. But what does it all mean? What could the cat represent? Why is it so large? What could a woman waking up to this traditionally small creature who has become a giant, let’s say beast, mean about a woman and her daily life? What could it imply about the role of women in the household and society? What could it say about the existence of pets in the home? Our view of them in our culture? Or perhaps it’s simply a story about a large cat.

Magical realism isn’t about how the magic appears and never requires an explanation. It’s about how the characters manage that change and what it means to their life. Waking up a cockroach, a giant foot appearing on a beach, or the yellow wallpaper with a woman trapped on the other side. These obstacles point out the obvious: the random feet mysteriously washing up on beaches in the Pacific Northwest, the drudgery of modern life, the mistreatment and misunderstanding of postpartum depression, and the everyday pressures and demands on women. Using these magical elements is a subversive way of sharing struggles, fears, and frustrations without naming them—a secret way of pointing a finger. A sneaky way to get something past the surface reader who only sees a strange story of a man turning into a cockroach or that the yellow wallpaper is driving a woman insane. At the same time, being a treasure trove for those who take the time to ask, “What is this story really about?”

Making the Mundane Magnificent With the Marvelous Magical Real

Making the Mundane Magnificent With the Marvelous Magical Real

Instructor: Christy O'Callaghan

Start Date: Monday, August 26, 2024

Duration: 4 Weeks

Live Zoom Classes: Thursdays, 4 pm - 5:30 pm PT; 6 pm - 7:30 pm CT; 7 pm - 8:30 pm ET

Feedback: Helpful Instructor Feedback and Encouraging Peer Workshop

Cost: $185, which includes four live Zoom classes, instructor feedback, group workshopping, and discussions.

Description: Sharpen your pencil because this is a generative class where we will write the marvelous, magical real pulled from our everyday lives. What ordinary thing could be extraordinary as you walk through the supermarket, or what would happen if you forgot to tell the bees of a birth or death, or if the snippets pulled from grandma’s bedtime tales came to life? In this class, we will create strange stories, tall tales, and fairy fables—short stories intertwined with our daily life.

The class is an opportunity to explore the marvelous magical real, an often misunderstood and glossed-over genre. This is a 4-week class with weekly writing prompts and readings of short stories by women. Students will write one piece under 500 words each week and a prompt for 15 minutes of daily writing sessions, use their life to spark their imagination, and read an assigned short story. It is a generative class with people sharing their work, photos, and stories they have found.

Goal:

Students will let their imagination play in their everyday life. They will carve out a daily writing practice and let their world inspire them. They will share their work with their classmates. They will gain a more extensive understanding of magical realism and that there is never too much or too little magic. By the end of this class, participants will have started a habit of freewriting, gained a better understanding of magical realism, and have started at least five new stories. Mostly, they will have fun finding the strange in the everyday and capturing it on the page.

Format:

4 weeks for 90 minutes in person via Zoom each week: Thursdays, 7 pm - 8:30 pm EST. We will use a shared space on Google Docs to add prompt ideas, images, words, and quotes. It will be a space to share published stories or book titles that may inspire the group. Students will post their new stories to the space, and the rest of the class will read them before we meet. These will be first drafts and will not be perfect (which is okay). They are a chance to see how everyone interprets the prompt in their own way. We will discuss the pieces when we meet, what we enjoyed, and possibilities for consideration.

When Life Fissures: Writing About Grief in Fragments

4 weeks starting Oct 7

Grief is an experience that never feels complete. Yes, you can explain the chronology of what led to someone’s death and its aftermath, but the way that we experience grief is both cyclical and fragmented. How could it not be? There is something missing from our lives now, and so it makes sense to write about grief in a way that reflects our experience of it. In this course, we will read Bluets by Maggie Nelson and a handful of craft and other literary essays that explore different ways to write about grief. We’ll look at the impact that metaphors and imagery have on grief narratives, and also focus on the importance of rhythm and pace to reflect our experience. Led by Chelsey Clammer!

Writing Disabled Characters in Fiction

Writing Disabled Characters in Fiction

Live Zoom Classes:

6 weeks starting Oct 15

Disabled people make up about 20% of the U.S. population, but only about 2% of disabled characters are represented on-screen and most of that representation deals with damaging stereotypes. Films and novels like Me Before You boast the dangerous notion that it’s better off to be dead than disabled. Other characters, such as those found in popular YA novels like Five Feet Apart and Everything, Everything portray chronic illness/disability as miserable and perpetuate harmful tropes. This six-week class will examine writing disabled characters in fiction. By the end of this class, students will have a 3-5-page outline and opening chapters (8-15 pages per chapter) to their novels with disabled characters. Led by Dr. Lara Ameen!

Writing Prose Poetry Workshop

Writing Prose Poetry

Live Zoom Classes:

4 weeks starting Nov 4

Prose poetry is the black sheep of the poetry world, with many saying it is an oxymoron or that it doesn’t exist at all. This is no surprise, as its rise was an act of rebellion against the restrictions of formal poetry. Many writers find it liberating to create. Others are surprised at how writing poetry in the prose form improves their writing in general. In this class, we will read, write, submit, and explore prose poetry, briefly looking at its history, its greats, resources, and starting or continuing our own writing practice. Led by Lorette C. Luzajic, founding editor of The Mackinaw, a new journal of prose poetry, as well as the nine-year-old flagship journal of ekphrasis, The Ekphrastic Review!
