Trash It, Don't Flush It Drains (toilets, sinks, etc.) are not trash cans, and the wastewater system can’t handle chemicals or trash. Chemicals can harm the treatment plant and environment, and trash can cause back-ups and overflows. Paper and plastic trash, such as the items listed below, should be put in your garbage can or dumpster:  disposable diapers and wipes dental floss feminine hygiene products and applicators cat litter cigarettes plastics paper towels Visit our Pollution Prevention page for additional items that should go in the garbage and not down the drains.

On Site with the Experts

In October, we hosted the Willamette Riverkeepers at our Biosolids Management Facility in north Eugene. We talked about the processing of solids from the treatment plant, and how we reuse them as a natural fertilizer on our poplar trees. Pictured are attendees with Residuals Supervisor, Randy Gray, at the lagoons. Here, solids take their time naturally breaking down and stabilizing before being applied to the land. Last month, we also hosted the University of Oregon's Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Studies at our regional Water Pollution Control Facility, located in Eugene. Students walked through the whole process (literally!) and can be seen here at the bar screens, where the treatment process starts, with Operations Technician, Kim Olsen. Run to Stay Warm Sponsorship On November 24, Eugene Water and Electric Board (EWEB) held their annual Run to Stay Warm Race, right along the Willamette River. The event was well-attended by both participants and spectators who came out to watch, cheer and take part in the festivities. Several wastewater staff also participated in the race (see photo) and enjoyed a damp but fun day, supporting a good cause. The Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission was happy to again sponsor this year's event, which raises funds to assist those in our community to ensure they have heat this winter.
