A MESSAGE TO OUR READERS:

Friends,
First, I hope this finds you and your family healthy and safe. As the world begins to reopen after COVID-19, Governor Newsom has issued an executive order extending Brown Act accommodations which will allow the continuance of virtual meetings for another 60 days. In an abundance of caution and for the health and safety of our Board, staff, and stakeholders, MWDOC will continue to conduct our business virtually until the Governor’s executive order calls for a change in direction. Thankfully, we have been able to successfully transition our in-person meetings to a virtual platform, and our Board and Committee meetings have seen increased attendance and public participation. While COVID-19 still brings uncertainty moving forward, a key function of the water industry is to mitigate uncertainty and increase reliability.
We understand that the coronavirus and PFAS are creating challenges for our retail agencies and the public we serve, and so, following months of thoughtful review by our Board and staff, and with unprecedented input from our member agencies, MWDOC passed our Budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2020, with a decrease on our meter rate. Our hope is that this rate reduction will help our agencies as they plan and prepare their finances in the wake of the obstacles they face during these very challenging times. As always, we at MWDOC are here for you.
Robert Hunter, MWDOC General Manager

MWDOC ASSUMES LEADERSHIP OF THE WATER ENERGY EDUCATION ALLIANCE
Tiffany Baca, Public Affairs Manager, MWDOC
Recent studies have shown that in the next 10 years the number of California residents age 65 and older is expected to double, reaching 8.6 million. In the next five to ten years, a flood of skilled water and energy industry professionals are expected to retire, and they are taking decades of institutional knowledge with them. This “Silver Tsunami” has incited an urgency to recruit the next generation of skilled technical workers, and the benefits of cultivating high school Career Technical Education (CTE) programs has never been more apparent.

A DIFFERENT DAY AND AGE IN EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
Vicki Osborn, Director of Emergency Management, MWDOC
Typically, when you tell someone you work in emergency management they say “Oh, so you plan for earthquakes?” Or my favorite, “So you’re a doomsday prepper?” Today, a new question has been added, “What does a water agency do for pandemics and protests?” It seems unreal that we are now witnessing worldwide anxiety over the emotional and economic impacts caused by a pandemic with civil rights unrest occurring at the same time
