Winner Announced!

The TORO Company, in partnership with MWDOC, has selected a winner for the Xtreme Water Makeover Contest! 13th ANNUAL OC WATER SUMMIT
May 29, 2020

 Join us on Friday, May 29 for the 13th annual Orange County Water Summit. Business professionals, water agencies, and elected officials will be brought together to examine topics making headlines today, such as federal versus state water management, infrastructure projects, contaminants of emerging concern, climate change, and emergency management. The event will be held at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and will once again feature Fritz Coleman, NBC4 Weathercaster, as Master of Ceremonies. Registration is now open, and sponsorship opportunities are available.

BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN THE MWDOC SCHOOL PROGRAMS

For the first time, MWDOC now offers water education school programs for all Orange County students in grades K-12. Through these programs, sponsored by participating MWDOC member agencies, students learn about Orange County water under one of the most successful, environment-based education programs in southern California. Using the environment as context for learning, students become thoughtful water stewards equipped for active citizenship as well as for academic and career success.

Shows That Teach

MWDOC’s Elementary School Program (grades K-2) provider, Shows That Teach , has produced two engaging, post-assembly videos to help teachers, young students, and their families continue learning about the importance of water long after the show. As part of the MWDOC Water Education School Program, Shows That Teach offers a fun, educational, and interactive assembly-style program that uses music, humor, and audience participation to teach students about topics such as the water cycle, water supply, and thoughtful water stewardship. CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY INITIATIVE LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE

For nearly fifty years, MWDOC has been teaching Orange County students about the value and importance of water. Over the past several months, MWDOC Public Affairs staff has been working with the California Environmental Literacy Initiative (CAELI), State Education and Environment Roundtable , and the Orange County Department of Education - which includes Inside the Outdoors - to revise school program goals, and develop a comprehensive training plan to achieve environmental literacy in education programs and traditional classrooms across Orange County. OC STEM INITIATIVE LUNCH AND LEARN
January 21, 2020

MWDOC Public Affairs staff engaged with OC STEM Ecosystem Institute members in a Lunch and Learn discussion about water industry career pathways, and effective ways to build partnerships between educators, program administrators, and community-based organizations. Staff also provided information on school program opportunities, and offered connections to available MWDOC resources that help bring hands-on water education into the classroom.
GIRL SCOUTS WATER RESOURCES AND CONSERVATION PATCH CLINIC
January 11, 2020

Produced jointly with Girl Scouts of Orange County, MWDOC offers the Water Resources and Conservation Patch Program to Girl Scouts of all ages. Through this hands-on, STEM-based program, MWDOC partners with its member agencies to host clinics that teach Girl Scouts about where their water comes from, the importance of Orange County water resources, and ways to use water wisely. At the January 11 clinic, nearly 50 girls earned their patches by completing a tour of El Toro Water District’s Water Recycling Plant, and by participating in a water filtration activity led by MWDOC Public Affairs staff.
CALIFORNIA NGSS STATEWIDE ROLLOUT 6
December 11-12, 2019

MWDOC Public Affairs staff participated in a panel and hosted an information booth at a California Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Statewide Rollout in December. The two-day professional training opportunity engaged participants in grade appropriate learning sequences with an environmental literacy focus. K-12 educators, administrators, academic coaches, and curriculum leads learned how to use environmental phenomena as a focal point for teaching NGSS, and were introduced to the importance of connecting teachers with community-based organizations to enhance lesson plans.

The Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) Board of Directors has elected Satoru "Sat" Tamaribuchi as President and reelected Joan C. Finnegan to serve as Vice President for 2020. Director Tamaribuchi was elected to the MWDOC Board in November 2014.
