It's unanimous! Minh Ngo chosen as Board President

At our December 12 Organizational Meeting, Minh Ngo was unanimously selected by his MUSD Board of Education colleagues as the 2024 Board President.


Kelly Yip-Chuan was the unanimous choice for 2024 Board Vice President and Dr. Anu Nakka was the unanimous selection for 2024 Board Clerk.


Ngo immediately thanked 2023 President Norwood for his ongoing leadership of the board governance team. "It has been truly amazing what we've accomplished in this past year, and will continue to accomplish as a board governance team," he said.


The Board selected their school site and committee assignments, set the board meetings calendar and re-adopted the board group agreements.

Milpitas HS choir stars Rachel Plummer and Akash Sriram

MHS choir students Akash Sriram and Rachel Plummer for being selected to perform with the California Choral Directors Association (CCDA) All-State Honor Choir. 

Milpitas HS journalist alumna Riya Vyas

MHS alumna Riya Vyas, a former student journalist for the MHS Union and current freshman at UC Berkeley, for winning the inaugural Student Freedom of Information Award from the Student Press Law Center.

Principal's Report: Burnett Elementary School celebrates 60th anniversary

Dr. Hanna Asrat, Principal of Burnett Elementary School, shared her school's attendance data and mechanisms before introducing this 60th Anniversay Diamond Jubilee Video Tribute.

MUSD team introduces Restorative Circle practices during Climate, Culture & Engagement Study Session

The topic for a Study Session with the MUSD School Board and community was student Culture, Climate, and Engagement. Data from our Climate and Culture survey administered in the fall was shared in conjunction with tiered student support programming. The study session objectives included:

  • Build a shared understanding of the research findings surrounding exclusionary practices and student outcomes.
  • Experience Circle Practice support the development of school community and shared accountability.
  • Establish a commitment to build up a comprehensive system of student support.

Showing Up Matters! Attendance initiative update

For the 23-24 school year, the district and school sites collaborated to engage, inform, and support our students and families around positive attendance. We know that when students are present, they increase their opportunities for learning and growing individually and as a citizen of their school community. As a district, MUSD is committed to achieve 97% average daily attendance for the 23-24 school year. Staff shared attendance data comparatives and strategies of engagement to support sites, parents and students.

Say Something Anonymous reporting system

The Say Something Anonymous Reporting System (SS-ARS) program empowers students to be upstanders and say something to a trusted adult when they recognize warning signs and threats, as well as offers ways students can grow a community of upstanders.

 

The program is designed around three goals that are accomplished using the program's framework and reinforced through the program cycle. The three goals of the Say Something-ARS program are to teach students how to:

  • Recognize warning signs and threats of someone who may be at-risk of hurting themselves or others.
  • Say something to a trusted adult to get help and how to submit a tip to the Anonymous Reporting System.
  • Grow a community of upstanders who look out for one another.

Academy of Travel & Tourism student Kimberly Garcia shares her Quinceanera event pitch to Board and community. She was joined by Hospitality Teacher and Academy of Travel & Tourism Coordinator Tricia Brownstein.

Sikh American Awareness and Appreciation Month Video Resolution

Rose Elementary School students were featured in a video reading of Resolution 2024.20 Recognizing and Honoring November as California Sikh American Awareness and Appreciation Month, which was unanimously approved by the Board.

Superintendent Cheryl Jordan shared her State of the District Update, which included attendance data, Jack Emery numbers and more.

Communications & Publications of MUSD Update

Communications Specialist Scott Forstner outlined all the ways MUSD continues to improve communications systems for better outreach to parents, students and staff.

The Board of Education approved the following education items at the December 12, 2023 board meeting:


  • Nominate potential candidate, if any, to stand for election to the Santa Clara County Committee on School District Organization (Dr. Anu Nakka was nominated)
  • Accept the 2023-24 First Interim Report and submit a positive financial certification to the Santa Clara County Office of Education
  • Conduct Public Hearing on Sunshine Proposal: California School Employees Association (CSEA) Chapter 281 Initial Proposal for Successor Contract to Milpitas Unified School District
  • Review Resolution 2024.21 A School Digital Citizenship & Cyberbullying Resolution
