MS Visio

Adding more shapes.

While Visio installs out-of-the-box with a large library of shapes arranged into a number of different stencils, you’re not in any way restricted to just the shapes Microsoft provides.  There’s a vast reservoir of additional shapes available either free or commercially from third-party vendors.  Googling either “Visio Stencils” or “Visio Shapes” will turn up dozens. (And a search of the Microsoft web site is a good starting point - they offer additional stencils for free download as well.)

Speaking of shapes, there’s an often overlooked feature that can be just the ticket to help find just the right one.  While viewing a drawing click ‘More Shapes’ in the Shapes task pane. At the bottom of the menu that opens click ‘Show Document Stencil.’  A new stencil will be added to the task pane containing a representative of all the shapes now in use or that have ever been used on the current drawing.
