Save the Date! Sexually Transmitted Infections: Public Health Status and Opportunities for Multipurpose Prevention Technologies

This upcoming webinar in our “Let’s Talk MPTs” series will feature discussion from a range of experts in the HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) prevention fields to discuss topics including current trends in STIs and opportunities and challenges for MPTs that target STIs. The webinar will take place Thursday 12 January 2023. Featured speakers are James Cummins (NIAID), Ina Park (UCSF Department of Family and Community Medicine) and Katherine Yang (UCSF School of Pharmacy). Save the date to join us!
Call for Papers!
We are very pleased that Frontiers in Reproductive Health will be publishing two complementary special issues on MPTs over the next year. The first special issue, “Multipurpose Prevention Technologies for HIV, STIs and Pregnancy” will focus on the current status of MPTs for women, with articles covering formulation science, clinical trials, socio-behavioral research, and implementation research in a “bench to bedside” approach. The deadline for Manuscript Extension submission is 16 January 2023 (read more here).

The second special issue, “Multipurpose Prevention Technologies: Call for Innovative Strategies to Address Critical Priorities and Gaps” will focus on innovative approaches to address priorities and gaps to advance the MPT field, and seeks papers from MPT developers and other stakeholders that are relevant to the MPT field. The deadline for Abstract submission to the second issue is 20 April 2023 and Manuscript submission is 20 June 2023 (read more here).
ICFP 2022 Presentation
The IMPT presented in collaboration with CIFF and UNITAID on MPTs as a part of a panel, "Investing in contraceptive R&D to reduce the unmet need for family planning," at the 6th annual International Family Planning Conference that took place in Thailand this November! If you missed it, you can view our presentation here.

Bi-Annual MPT SACC Meeting
In December, our MPT SACC (Supporting Agency Collaboration Committee) convened to to refine key action areas and strategies to address priorities and gaps for MPT field. The SACC is comprised of representatives from a growing number of government agencies, private foundations, and other MPT supporters worldwide. Established in 2013, the mission of the SACC is to facilitate collaboration and consensus among supporting agencies, maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of MPT funding.

Upcoming Conferences and Key Dates
January 12-13, 2023 | Reproductive Ethics Conference (Galveston, USA)
The 2023 Reproductive Ethics Conference will convene professionals across various fields in Galveston, Texas to explore the range of topics addressed in reproductive ethics. From 12 to 13 January, discussions will focus on controversies and challenges of reproductive ethics posed by new technologies, political and ideological divisions, theology, and changing cultural norms. February 15-16, 2023 | Reproductive Health Innovation Summit (Boston, USA)
The 3rd annual Reproductive Health Innovation Summit will take place in Boston, Massachusetts this upcoming year. This summit offers participants the opportunity for reproductive health entrepreneurs and potential investors to network. IMPT director and co-founder, Bethany Young Holt, along with other IMPT partners will attend as speakers and participants. If you plan to attend, please let us know. February 19-22, 2023 | Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (Seattle, USA)
The 2023 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) will convene in Seattle, Washington to present, discuss, and critique investigations into the epidemiology and biology of human retroviruses and associated diseases. Attendance at the conference is open to researchers and clinical educators actively involved in the study and management of HIV, other retroviruses, and related medical conditions. April 14-15, 2023 | Sperm | Health | Politics Conference (New Haven, USA)
This conference will convene a focused group of scholars, scientists, and clinicians who are rethinking and reframing male sexual and reproductive health in the United States. Each attendee will be asked to draft a short “thinkpiece” (500 to 1000 words), identifying what they perceive as the most pressing issues related to sperm/health/politics. April 28 - May 1, 2023 | Association of Clinical Research Professionals (Dallas, USA)

October 22-26, 2023 | 5th HIV Research for Prevention Conference (Lima, Peru + virtual)
The only global conference on HIV prevention research, HIVR4P, will bring together 1500 participants to foster interdisciplinary knowledge exchange on HIV vaccines, microbicides, PrEP, treatment as prevention and biomedical interventions, as well as their social and behavioral implications. This year's focus will be on overcoming HIV as a threat to public health and individual wellbeing, including in Latin America, where HIV cases are on the rise.

Applications are now open for MATRIX’s, a USAID funded project, Technology Accelerator Domain 1. Applicants from US, Kenyan, South African, and Zimbabwean institutions are invited to apply for this opportunity for funding to advance research applications for development of new HIV prevention approaches. They are seeking innovative research applications for the development of new HIV prevention drugs and strategies, multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs), and technologies that enable HIV prevention strategy development and have the potential to strengthen capacity in targeted countries. Development of Novel Nonsteroidal Contraceptive Methods (R61/R33 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
This funding opportunity from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) will support and facilitate multidisciplinary research approaches for the development of novel nonsteroidal contraceptive products for men and women that act prior to fertilization – including potential MPT products. While aiming to position validated methods for clinical development, the award also encourages innovative ideas and supports early stage, high-risk projects lacking validation. IAS HIV Vaccine Science Academy Applications 
The IAS Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise will award fellowships to 15 early- to mid-career scientists to receive training in workshops related to HIV vaccine research with international experts. This program is a collaboration with the South African Department of Science and Innovation as well as Health Sciences Faculty at the University of Witwatersrand. The deadline for applications is Sunday 15 January 2023. For more information, see here
