Superintendent's Message

Dear Mt. Pleasant Community,

We are grateful for your collaborative support in guiding our students toward academic success. Encouraging their best efforts at school and at home is so important. Consistent daily attendance is a crucial factor in their progress. Studies demonstrate that students with consistent attendance are more likely to excel in their studies and graduate. Through attending school regularly, their learning experience is enhanced, and they are more dedicated to achieving their educational goals.

We encourage you to connect with your child’s teacher to explore the best ways to support your student. Effective communication between parents, guardians and educators is vital for student success.

At Mt. Pleasant, we celebrate diversity and equality. In February, we honor Black History Month and acknowledge the invaluable contributions and legacy of African Americans in our nation. MPESD also celebrated Lunar New Year, a tradition that unites communities in vibrant festivities.

We appreciate your partnership in paving the way for our students to thrive and create a future filled with possibilities.

Sincerely,

Dr. Elida MacArthur

Superintendent

Family Literacy Project for TK-5 Families

You are invited! MPESD “3 to 3 Initiative” prepares students to know how to read by 3rd grade so that they can read all their lives. We are very excited to announce that we will be partnering up with MPESD families to support reading at home. Committing to interacting with your child and supporting their reading comprehension will not only improve your child’s language skills, but will help build your bond as a family.

Intervention teachers Mariel and Claudia will be facilitating a 10-week Family Literacy Project for TK-5 families where the parents will learn different ways to support their children with literacy at home. We will provide each family with books, resources, food, raffle prizes, etc. The sessions will take place the following Wednesdays from 9 AM to 10:30 AM, at the District Office, Board Room: March 6, 13, 20, 27, April 10, 17, May 1, 8, 15. Please see the details below and register!

A big thanks to Mariel and Claudia for organizing this very valuable parent engagement for our families! We thank everyone for your partnership!

Summer Programs

We are preparing lots of fun activities for the summer! Our Summer Program at Ida Jew Valle Vista and Robert Sanders Elementary Schools is launching on June 12, our first day with students. The academic portion of the summer program will run June 12 through July 12, with breaks on June 19, July 4, and July 5. Classes will be held 8 AM - 12 PM. We will be offering a Summer Literacy program for incoming Kindergarten students through 6th Graders, an ELEVATE Math program for incoming 3rd Graders through 8th Graders, and two Computer Science Innovation classes (CS201 and CS202) for incoming 6th Graders through 8th Graders. The programs will initially be offered by invitation only based on teacher input and student performance. If classes do not completely fill up, we will offer the programs to all students throughout the district and create a waitlist as necessary. Initial invitations will be sent out in March and open enrollment is expected to begin in April.

Students who attend the academic portion of the summer program will have the option of enrolling in the Enrichment Summer Program from 12 PM - 4 PM and then continue full day after the conclusion of the academic portion. The Enrichment Summer Program will run June 12 through July 30

We will also offer the before-school program care at 7 AM for students enrolled in either the Academic or Enrichment Summer Programs.

Honoring Black History Month

Thank you to everyone who attended our Black History Month event at August Boeger! It was an amazing evening celebrating, highlighting, and recognizing the contributions of historical Black Americans as well as those who have Black owned businesses in our community.

A special thank you to the planning team: Ashley Martin, Barbara Powell Padilla, Virginia Bailey, Nina Gilman-Cama, Mari Rivera, Trudy Martinez, Rebecca Nash.

This event could not have happened without the countless hours of planning and organizing. It truly was a team effort that the community took part in.

Thank you to all the district staff that attended: Dr. MacArthur, district administrators, board trustees, teachers, classified staff, and our custodians! Thank you to our student leaders in BBSU who handed out food, decorated, and helped with the set up.

Thank you to Ms. Nina Gilman's and Ms. Alyssa Smith's classes, who provided student work for all to see.

Lunar New Year

This year, we celebrated the rich heritage of Lunar New Year with unity. This cultural celebration is observed by many Asian communities worldwide, marking the beginning of the lunar calendar. Lunar New Year offers an opportunity for our students to learn about diverse cultures, traditions, and foster cross-cultural understanding.

Families who celebrate Lunar New Year do so by gathering to share meals, exchanging red envelopes that represent good luck, and attending festivals that include lion dances and more! We encourage you to take a moment to learn about Lunar New Year and understand its cultural significance in many communities around the globe

Supporting an Inclusive School Culture

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) are core values at MPESD. We are committed to creating an anti-racist, compassionate and inclusive school culture where every individual is treated with dignity in our diverse community. DEIB lessons shared in February are about Black History Month and Lunar New Year. The character trait to be recognized is Courage.

For the month of March, the lessons will focus on Women's History Month, Irish American Heritage Month, the Suffrage Movement, International Women's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Ramadan, and Cesar Chavez Day. The character trait to be focused on is Perseverance.

If there are questions or you are interested in learning more about DEIB, please reach out to your school to further the conversation. Thank you for supporting an inclusive school community!
