March 2024 @ MPDC
MPDC's North Star
Our Three Year Plan
MPDC is proud to share its 2024-2026 Strategic plan, guided by a framework of promoting community wealth building in Roxbury. We acknowledge the historic barriers faced by Boston’s Black and Brown residents in access to housing, employment, and asset and wealth building opportunities, resulting in the current racial wealth gap. This “North Star” is guiding MPDC’s commitment to creating access to wealth building for our residents and the broader neighborhood.

In our 58th year, we reaffirm our commitment to honoring the legacy of our founders and a vision for Roxbury grounded in comprehensive community development. MPDC advances its mission daily by supporting a vibrant and healthy Roxbury for residents and community members. In addition to offering stellar programs and resources, we will provide inclusive housing opportunities in the face of the growing crisis.

Over the next three years, we will continue to expand our youth and young adult workforce development programs while celebrating 20 years of arts, civic, and cultural programming at Hibernian Hall and continuing to advance The Dewitt Center's integral role as a community hub for resources, partnerships and programs. MPDC is also committed to organizational sustainability through the expansion and diversification of revenue by increasing our donor base, establishing an endowment for Hibernian Hall and The Dewitt Center, and seeking multi–year grants to offset operational expenses.

We are excited by this plan to implement effective strategies that are mission centered, transformative, and sustainable. MPDC will continue to assess, restructure, and partner with like-minded organizations to narrow the racial wealth gap for Black and Brown families in Roxbury and the City of Boston.

The Dewitt Center had a magical March!
On the last Friday of every month, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm, The Dewitt Center hosts Teen Night in collaboration with Village In Progress and many other MPDC departments. Together, they provide a safe space for MPDC teen residents, Dewitt Center members, and other community members to participate in fun activities, socialize with their peers, and enjoy refreshments. Teen night activities range from game nights to video game tournaments and gym activities. Teen Nights are open to all MPDC residents and Dewitt Center members ages 13-19.
On Saturday, March 23rd, one of The Dewitt Center's program partners, Modern Mentor, hosted their Spring Fling Bunny Hop for children 14 and under. Over 60 community members were in attendance to support this fantastic event. The children danced, enjoyed refreshments and arts & crafts, and had the opportunity to take pictures with the Easter Bunny. To end the day, participants engaged in an egg hunt in The Dewitt Center Tech Lab and were able to go home with goodies to fill their baskets.
The Dewitt Center recently hosted the annual Abundantly Black event to close out Black History Month. Over 150 community members were in attendance for this fantastic event. Many local vendors, such as Nubian Square Investment Advisors, Tea Boss by Ashley, ZnZ Slushies, and A Family Affair Catering, attended the event. This was an excellent opportunity for businesses to sell their goods and build connections with community members. Lastly, there was an array of entertainment for the guests from the Abundantly Black Community Gospel Choir, The Handy Ensemble, and The Tony Williams Dance Center Afro Jazz Dance Troupe. The Abundantly Black event was an amazing representation of what it means to be Black in Boston!
Jean Appolon Expressions African Dance Workout happens every Monday at The Dewitt Center from 6 to 7 pm. The class is free for MPDC residents and is taught by JAE Artistic Manager and Company Dancer Mcebisi Xotyeni. In the hour-long class, participants of all ages get an excellent cardio warm-up through African dance movements. They are guided through a series of stretches and strength-building exercises. Dancers will travel across the floor, moving in progressions, and the class finishes with a combination of all attendees learning and dancing together to live drumming

It is important to explore all homeownership assistance programs, including the Equity Builder Program and Housing Our Workforce, to help address the affordable housing crisis in New England.
The Equity Builder Program (EBP) offers grants to help first-time buyers earning up to 80% of the area median income with a down payment, closing cost, home rehabilitation assistance, and homebuyer education and counseling. Housing Our Workforce (HOW) offers grants to help homebuyers earning above 80% and up to 120% of the area median income with a down payment and closing cost assistance. For both programs, EBP and HOW, FHLBank Boston will begin accepting enrollments for qualified households on Monday, April 1, 2024. Approved members will have full access to the funds allocated to the EBP funding round until they have met their maximum amount or until the pool runs out. Funds are always on a first-come, first-served basis.

The programs offered by FHLB could be valuable to anyone who is currently in the home-buying process and has pre-approval. Please get in touch with your lender to ask if they are participating in the FHLB programs and apply for funding to be applied to your loan. This could increase your purchasing power.
