Habitat Enhancement Project Underway at Bear Gulch
Mossy logs, magical forest, and improved habitat for salmon

“Bear Gulch is an incredibly beautiful area, a very small valley with mossy, fern-covered walls and a high tree canopy that allows light to soak through the trees in a magical way,” says Mia Slone, a Mendocino Land Trust habitat restoration intern for the summer. On a recent day when she and other members of the MLT team visited Bear Gulch there was a trickle of water flowing through the creek. Before long, rains will increase the flow of the small stream. And when flows return, for the first time in a long while deep, habitat-rich pools will form and become ready to host future generations of salmon.
The Land Trust has a long history of making habitat enhancement projects happen. Since 2013, MLT has managed dam removal and culvert replacement projects that have opened 17 miles of previously inaccessible streams to spawning salmon. Additionally, MLT has been involved in the decommissioning and restoration of seven miles of old forest roads to reduce sediment runoff into salmon-bearing streams, and enhanced six miles of stream habitat by managing large woody debris projects. This summer, another stream enhancement project is in the works at Bear Gulch near the South Fork Noyo River in Jackson Demonstration State Forest.

The Mendocino Land Trust is seeking a highly motivated individual with a commitment to conservation who is interested in growing with the organization. This 20 hours per week position fundraises for a great cause, reports to the Executive Director and works closely with all staff. The primary focus of the Development Manager is to assist the Land Trust in reaching its fundraising goals.
Remote work considered from anywhere in Mendocino or Sonoma Counties with monthly visits to the Land Trust office in Fort Bragg. May require occasional travel throughout Mendocino County.
The Land Trust offers a benefit package including 50% employer contribution to group medical and dental plans.

Please join MLT staff at Seaside Beach at 7:30 pm on Sunday, August 7. We plan to enjoy snacks and, if we are lucky, a fabulous sunset. If you prefer not to sit in the sand, we encourage you to bring a lightweight chair. Sunset is at 8:17 pm. If we have clear skies, we hope you will stay awhile - once it gets dark astronomer Gabe Prochter will be there to point out planets, stars and even galaxies! Coastal Cleanup Day:
Save the Date and Join the Fun!

Mendocino Land Trust has served as county coordinator for the statewide cleanup since 2002. Last year, we had 20 organizations captain sites along the coast. And because Coastal Cleanup Day is not just about the coast -- it is about protecting all our waterways -- the Mendocino County Resource Conservation District coordinates several cleanup sites in the Ukiah Valley. This year we would love to see some sites established in Willts, Potter Valley, Laytonville and other inland communities. Please email info@mendocinolandtrust.org if you know of a group that might be interested in participating. The California Coastal Commission provides supplies and directions, MLT publicizes the event (and participating organizations!) and works with local waste haulers to get dumpsters and transfer station vouchers donated for the event!

Families Invited to Join August 20 Family Field Trip! |
Mendocino County families are invited to join MLT naturalists for fun at the beach! These programs are free and intended for families with kids between the ages of three and eight but anyone with a kid is welcome to attend. Bilingual program in Spanish and English.

We hope you will join MLT staff and interns at one of our volunteer projects this month:
Thursday, August 11 from 10 am - 12 pm
Saturday, August 13 from 9:30 am - 12 pm
Dress to get dirty. Bring gloves and water. Tools will be provided, but if you have a pair of hand clippers that you like using, feel free to bring them. Activities will include pruning along the trail and removal of invasive blackberry, ivy, iceplant, and others. And we can always use help with beach cleanup. Meet at the south end of the Mendocino College Coast Center parking lot. If you arrive late, wander across the field and down the trail along the creek and you'll find us!
